The high F-sharp is often hard to play--it either doesn't speak or it screeches. Students often develop a fear of it. Just be confident and definitely don't back away from it. No. I play flute in a band that has an oboe, too, and they are two completely different instruments. You hold the flute sideways and blow into a lip hole and with the oboe you hold it down and blow on a double reed.

The best student flute would be the student that works the hardest at trying to master the flute. Not only do you have to practice hard, but, you also have to be able to play all scales correctly and fluently. You should know how to memorize and site read 2 or more pieces of music. Also you should pay attention in class, and always have faith and believe in yourself. You should really just:PRACTICE! PRACTICE!PRACTICE! AND ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST. ALSO, CHALLENGE YOURSELF AND PRACTICE, PRAY, AND BELIEVE THAT YOU WILL GET BETTER!:-) I used a Yamaha when i started and its briliant for students :)

It depends on a lot of things. There are some student concert flutes you could get for under 100 dollars; heck, I have an Amazon-loving friend who has a 20-dollar flute from some dubious Chinese company. Unfortunately, those don't sound as professional as hand-made flutes, such as by Powell, or even a Yamaha. If you're looking for a student flute that won't break every five minutes like the one said deal-loving friend owns, you'll be out probably about 300-500 dollars, unless it's used. My first flute was a used student Yamaha I got used from Music&Arts for about $200. Right now, I use a Di Zhao flute that was 1070 dollars and is still an intermediate student flute.
