What are the advantages of a wooden flute?
I've played both but mainly the metal one more often. The wooden one gives a more asian-ish sound to it while the metal one is just a plian normal sounding flute. An example of this is in one of the final fantasy songs, they used a wooden flute instead of a metal one because since final fantasy is japanese, (i think), they used a wooden flute.
Hope that helps :)

What instruments blend well with flutes?
It depends on the style. Typically I think of the saxophone as a jazz instrument. So, saxophones are great in jazz bands. Jazz bands usually have trumpets, piano, trombones, drums, bass, saxophones, and sometimes guitar.
What are flutes made of back in the early days?
Typically flutes are made of silver but early flutes were made of wood. Native Americans would usually take wood then carve it to create early early flute.
Im asuming your a kid so am i so if your asking how much a new flute cost, I play them myself, and they cost just about 1000 dollors. If that's not what your asking type it again and then I'll answer.
This is a loaded question.
There are tons of different flute brands out there and each has it's own charictaristics. This answer will change for every person that you talk to. For example, I play a Pearl, and I love it. Other people would rather run a Pearl over with a car, than play it. Some people swear by Gemeindhart, I would rather run one over with a car.
I can give you a list of some flute brands that I find to be fantasticly reliable and that have good tone and characteristics.
Mateki; Sankyo; Yamaha; Pearl; Sonare; Lyric; Mirumatsu; Miyazawa to name a few
One thing that is mostly universal with "good" flutes; Japanese. However, exceptions to this rule do include the James Taylor (internationally acclaimed) and the Powell, and you will find others. And DON'T assume that because it's Japanese, it's good. The exceptions go both ways. (IF YOU'RE A FLUTE PLAYER OUT THERE AND I DIDN'T NAME YOUR FAVORITE BRAND, FORGIVE ME. I'M JUST TRYING TO GIVE AS SHORT OF AN OVER VIEW AS I CAN, WHILE STILL PROVIDING GOOD INFORMATION)
The key to finding a "good" flute, is take the time to do your homework. Go somewhere that has a vast selection to choose from with flute experts to help you understand each difference (open hole vs closed, split 'E' vs not, offset 'G' vs inline, etc). Most of these characteristics are the player's preference and there is no "wrong" answer, so long as what you choose is reliable, with good tone, and responds to YOU and YOUR playing style. Plan on taking a couple hours out of your day to play-- indepth, don't just fiddle around-- each flute and find the one the feels and sounds best to you for your purposes.
Also, if you're looking for something nicer than a beginner flute, plan on spending AT LEAST $1300 (USD 2009). "Professional" flutes will start around $3000 (if you're lucky). Don't be scared to scrutinize even the most expensive flutes. Just because it costs $10,000 doesn't mean it's worth that much for YOUR purposes. Take into account your financial abilities as well as what you're using it for. If you're playing Carnegie and the flute is your source of income, the higher priced flute will make more sense to you than if you're say (like me) a broke college student that is a music major, but not going into performance. My $1500 Pearl will carry me as far as I'll need to go, but it may or may not for someone else.
Summary: A flute purchase is a very personal thing. Please be prepared.
I think Armstrong is very good. also vento. For begginers I didn't like geminhert so much
When was the modern day flute created?
Theobald Boehm evolved the flute and fingering system we currently use. But no one is sure who made the first flute, as they believe the first one dated back some 43,000 years, and was discovered in Slovenia. With something that old, it's doubtful if we'll ever know much more than we do.\
also he invented the flute in 1847
the first flute was not really a flute the first one made was a recorder and the recorder just slowly evolved into the flute
Flutes are most often made of silver, but can have any combination of silver, gold, nickel, platinum, and rosegold. The materials in order of price (lowest to highest) is: Nickel, silver plated, solid silver, rosegold, gold, and platinum. Silver is often considered the most reasonable price for the quality you will get, and many believe the sound is the most versatile. Gold is sometimes considered to have a warmer sound. Nickel is usually only used on student model flutes. Rosegold combines the warmth of gold and the versatility of silver into a unique timbre. It is cheaper than pure gold and many people like the combination of these two metals. Platinum is VERY expensive and most people only have small parts of their flutes made of platinum. It is considered good for articulation.
They are made of the same materials as they were 4,000 years ago plus some new materials. The only difference is the tooling. Those guys can now cut the wood precisely enough to make the flute be tuned perfectly. In the old days they used bamboo and cedar mostly. Now they are made from any type of wood and even PVC. Some new flutes are very exotic and can cost thousands. My flutes cost about $150 and they are cedar, cherry, PVC and mesquite.

The manner of identifying instrument families (a part of the branch of musical acoustics called Organology) has a classification tree-like structure. Woodwinds form one branch of that tree, branching from the wind-actuated instruments.
As trees do, the wind-actuated branch branches, and each branch identifies the instruments in it by the way wind is used to actuate them (i.e. make them sound).
The pan flute belongs to the woodwind family because it is a flute. In fact, within the flue-pipe-subdivision of wind instruments, the pan flute (or pan pipe) is somewhat unique, because the edge of the pipe which divides the wind stream from the player's emboucher has no enclosure and is on the edge of the pipe, much like when you blow across the top of a soda bottle. The recorder, penny whistle and other fipple flutes (so named for the block which forms the windway) use an enclosed windway to direct the air stream against the edge which causes the vibrations, while the transverse flute (called German flute in the Baroque period) has the hole across which you blow on the side.
The woodwinds are largely called 'wood' winds because the earliest forms of the instruments were made from wood. The brasses are so-called because they were originally formed of brass tubing. The mouthpieces of each kind of instrument carry the type with them, so Saxophones are woodwinds even though they are made of brass, because they use the single-reed mouthpiece similar to clarinets, which are still most often made of wood. Likewise, flutes, now generally made of metal, were originally entirely made of wood.
The pan flutes are normally made of wood or a particular chambered reed (such as bamboo), and are considered woodwinds because of their origin, in addition to being a type of flute, which are members of the woodwind family.
Is flute chords and piano chords the same?
no
Actually, it depends on what you mean. A flute is a single note instrument, so a single flute cannot play a chord. However, the notes are the same, because a standard flute is a concert pitched instrument, so a C on the piano is a C on the flute, therefore, a C chord on the piano is a C chord on the flute. the difference is, it takes 3 flutes to play a tried, but a single piano can play a triad.

How do you change the loudness of flutes?
To soften the volume of the flute's sound, one must simply use less air. Changing the embouchure will only change the flute's pitch. To increase the volume, use more air. Open your throat and make sure you know the difference between more air and faster air. Faster air and a tighter embouchure will make the pitch higher, rather than louder.
