Of course! Any animal or living thing is important in the food chain! Even plants are because they produce off the sun. The crab eats the plants on the ocean floor right? So of course they are.

Even if the prey is lucky enough to run off, it will die soon and the Rattlesnake will follow the scent and then swallow it. They are on top of their food chain, but they have some animals like the King Snake on top of it.

I can state with certainty that wild snake will eat carrion. I can't vouch for how common this is but I can say that the three metre wild carpet snake I have living on my property regularly eats the dead mice I leave out for it. Initially, when I noticed the dead mice I had trapped and thrown away into the garden disappearing, I assumed a fox or local cat had been picking them up at night. But then I saw a three metre carpet snake, that has been living around the property for a number of years, slither up and eat one! I put another dead mouse close to the snake whilst it was resting after eating a large possum, and it awoke from its slumbers, consumed the mouse and returned to its rest!

So although I don't know how common this is, I can tell you that wild snakes will certainly eat carrion.
