It depends on how long the fox lives. In the wild, few foxes live much beyond their 5th year. Assuming they breed the first time at a year of age, they would only produce 3-4 litters of kits over their brief life.

If you treat them with good respect you can legally adopt that animal but if you are treating it with abuse the spca has the rights to take that animal away from you. A lair is a general term for an underground or enclosed place that an animal not necessarily a fox uses to hide, sleep, etc. The name for a fox's lair is a 'den', or a less commonly used term for a fox's lair is a 'covert'. I don't think I have ever heard it called anything else, either. As children, we just called it a fox hole. I've heard it called a den on a TV nature show, too.

Occasionally a fox's lair is also referred to as a 'holt'.
