What is French Horn bearing oil?

Bearing and Linkage oil is used for the metal rods that make the valves move.

Many horns used strings for this function and don't have any real bearings/linkages. They're on the outside of the horn, so it's easy to tell if you've got them or not.

If you have bearings/linkages and don't know how to oil them, there's some wonderful youtube videos that can help you out!! I know I needed them when I was first looking up how to oil my horn with the different oils.

I happen to have a horn that uses strings, but I still use bearing/linkage oil for the springs that make the valves spring back after they're pushed down. I'm not sure this is a good idea since I've noticed my springs beginning to tarnish after doing this, but it definitely makes the valves feel smoother.

What is the average cost to fix a frozen third valve on a double Holton 181 French horn?

You can fix this yourself, probably!

Remove the slide for that valve. Position/prop-up the horn so that the slide is pointing up. Squirt 10 -15 drops of 3in1 oil (or something similar) into each tube. The oil should seep and crawl around the frozen valve. Let it sit several hours and put in some more. After 2 - 3 applications put the slide back in (leave it propped up) and wait a day. After a day or 2 try the valve.. don't force it!!..

If it still won't budge it may need to be taken to a technician at your local music store.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It should cost less than $50 and you can do some real serious damage trying to repait it yourself. It just isn't worth the amount saved. It is easy to ring the head off the screw because the head is much larger than the shank and can't take a lot of torque. Regulating the action is also tedious if you havn't done it before. If you can free it up by adding oil and light pressure after it sets awhile, STOP. Take it to a repair man.

How do you drain spit from a French horn?

To drain the spit from a french horn, make sure the mouthpiece is NOT connected, then flip the horn so that the bell is facing to your bottom right, and the mouthpiece slot is facing your bottom left. From there, remove the tuning slide from the instrument. Then simply flick the slide to remove the spit from it, and reinsert it to your horn.

If this does not work, you spit is probably in one of your valve slides. Follow the same process from above, except turn it so your valves are pointing upward, and their slides downward. Then empty each one in turn in the way mentioned above, until the spit is located.
