The English horn player reads music in treble clef. Like many wind instruments, it is a transposing instrument. When the English horn player reads any printed note, the instrument produces sound pitched a perfect fourth lower. For example, when the English horn player reads and fingers the instrument for C, an F is produced. If transposing down it would be a fifth

What are the advantages and disadvantages of playing french horn?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

French horn is very hard- and that is both an advantage and a disadvantage. It is hard to learn and the music can be challenging to play, but many directors, composers, and colleges favor french horn over many other instruments because of its unique tone quality and sound. Scholarships are widely available to french horn players because it is such a hard instrument to master.

It is a hard instrument to play because the space between notes of the same fingering, called partials, are very close together, making it hard to tell which note is being played. It also takes a lot of air and embouchure strength to play high notes, and even more air to play low notes. Another disadvantage is if you blow to hard your lungs and heart explode

What is the fingering for C flat on French horn?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The C scale for horns has no sharps or flats in the key signature, so starting on low C, the fingerings are: C (open), D (1), E (open), F (1), G (open), A (1 2), B (2), C (open)

Concert C would be the G scale for horns, which means it has one sharp in the key signature. Starting on low G, the fingerings are: G (open), A (1 2), B (2), C (open), D (1), E (open), F# (2), G (open).

The fingerings on both are for a single French horn.

How do you change notes on the french horn?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

move ur lips and valves.

^ and also, going farther on that:

  • Move you lips aka your aperture bigger and smaller depending if you want to make the sound lower or higher
  • On a double horn, there are 4 valve, and MANY combinations, even with that being said, the mouth and air are the main things that control your notes
  • Also your hand position in the bell. I know some players who can change their note with their hand. For me, it just make me out of tune, but others are very skilled and can do that (they have bigger hands than me)

I hope that this helps you! Good luck!

How has the french horn changed?

How come blowing through a pipe makes a sound?

User Avatar

Brass instruments involve the blowing of air into a mouthpiece. The vibrations of the lips against the mouthpiece produce a range of frequencies. ... This forces the air inside of the column into resonance vibrations. The result of resonance is always a big vibration - that is, a loud sound.

Is French horn or baritone easier to play?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It depends on what key the single horn is in. A double horn is pitched in F and Bb, switching between the two keys with the thumb (T) valve. A Bb horn is easier to play because there's less tubing to blow through, making high notes easier to hit and lower notes clearer. However, the tone of them is particularly bright, giving it a nasty sound in the horn's middle and mid-low range. Because of this, a double horn a popular choice because it gives the musician the best of both worlds.

Despite this, starting off on a single F horn is actually a wise choice. Beginner horn music is generally really simple, so the higher and lower ranges of the horn aren't used. The longer they stay on the single F horn, the stronger they'll be when they switch to a double.
