How can you get financial help with funeral expences?
Many people buy life insurance exactly for this reason. If the policy is large enough, when the family member dies, his or her life insurance money covers the costs of the funeral. Sometimes friends and family members will offer to pay something to help out. Also, sometimes, family and friends will offer not necessarily financial help, but will offer to bring food and beverages to serve to visitors. If finances are an issue, you can keep the costs down by being upfront with the funeral home about your situation, and asking them to work with you in selecting a tasteful but inexpensive casket, floral arrangments, candles, and so on.

What does the sheath of wheat stand for at a funeral?
It is a sheaf of wheat, not a sheath, that is a covering for a knife or sword, also called a scabbard. I am not sure this is a funerary custom. In some of the Scandinavian countries a sheaf of wheat is displayed in front of a House on Christmas, this being a local Yuletide custom, nothing morbid. As wheat is edible food stuff one could raise objections to a waste of useful food when people are hungry. I guess it must be a Scandinavian folk-way, as is the Yule custom that is similar.

Do Mormons give money at funerals?
It isn't a set tradition for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) to give money at funerals, but some do. It depends on their personal preference and the desires of the deceased. Many Mormons these days choose to request a donation to a charity or foundation in lieu of flowers. Others ask for help with funeral expenses rather than flowers. It all depends on what the family wants.
As a Church, Church buildings and leaders are offered to hold and conduct the funeral at no charge, and each congregation has a women's organization that offers to provide a luncheon for the funeral attendees, also at no charge. All a Mormon family needs to pay for is the preparation of the body, casket, and burial.
Why do Japanese people hide their thumbs when a funeral car passes?
Much like Americans (when in their youth) try to avoid stepping on cracks in the sidewalk to avoid breaking their mothers back, Japanese people feel that if their thumbs are exposed while passing a funeral, or a hearse drives by, that their parents will die young. So they keep their thumbs hidden. Although there are some adults that still practice this, (Japanese tend to hold on to childhood things much longer than Americans) it is a silly superstition, that for the most part is not practiced by too many adults.
