George Washington Carver, nicknamed "Black Leonardo", by TIME magazine, as a reference to the polymath, Leonardo DA Vinci, attended several colleges and Universities. His formal education was limited by societal, political and policy prejudices. In the late 1870s, it was almost impossible for a Black man or woman to gain acceptance into any US college or University, thus, George Washington Carver endured and overcame many, many obstacles to attend college.

He started his college education at Highland College, in Highland, Kansas; now known as Highland Community College

He then studied studying art and piano at Simpson College, in Indianola, Iowa. His art Professor recognized his talent for painting flowers and plants and convinced him to study botany at Iowa State Agricultural College in Ames, Iowa.

He eventually obtained his Masters Degree from Iowa State
