Gerbils do cost alot as they cannot be placed in any old cage; they need a gerbilarium. These special cages are very costly, they are made of glass so that the gerbils cannot chew through and escape. They need lots of sawdust to cover the floor as they dig; its part of their nature. They can eat alot. They need a partner to live with; they can become very unhappy if left to live on their own and can die of lonelyness. They need lots of hay to build their nests with. Their toys cost more as they are made to be non chewable. But they are very clean animals and hardlyurinate or excrete, which mean they only need to be cleaned every two weeks. Some only need to be cleaned every month!

Yes! If well-tamed, these curious animals will love coming out of their cage and exploring with you--but be careful, that makes them sneaky escape artists as well!

Not really, because gerbils can climb chicken wire (I've seen one do it with my own eyes!) and when they climb it, it damages their paws or they could escape. A good choice for a gerbil cage is a large fish tank with wire mesh as a lid, since you can hang things like water bottles down from them.

So they don't dehydrate/lose water as easily in deserts and die.

You need to reask this question in a more specific manor. I cannot determine weather you mean a wild rodent or one at a store. Besides, to answer this, the type of rodent would need to be specefied.

Gerbils are desert rodents, which coincidentally makes them wonderful pets! The lack of water in the deserts means that a gerbil will use its body water more resourcefully, resulting in less urination. This means the cage will stink less than a hamster or guinea pig!

Common pet gerbils are the Mongolian gerbil. Since they live in Mongolia, they are semi-desert animals. They don't see pools of water often. I have never seen one swim or drown, but from what I've seen they definitely don't like it but can do their best at swimming. They will try to get out as soon as possible. Do NOT put a gerbil in a pool of water. It would be quite mean.

No, Gerbils are recognized by scent. If there is ever a gerbil that comes along without the same scent they will be veiwed as a threat to the familiar or single gerbil and attack it for fear of safety. Even two familiar gerbils are separated for hours or days they will respond as strangers and enemys when they meet again.

Perhaps PETA is unaware of what the "perverts" are doing to gerbils. Maybe you could alert them so that they can do something about the mistreatment of poor, innocent, animals such as Gerbils. PETA doesnt do anything because PETA doesnt care... They were sued... for killing over 1700 animals... think about it, they dont give a rats ass..

They can gnaw on them, but they can't live on them.

They don't exactly eat them but if they get close to your clothes, they might start chewing it, like they would to to a piece of cardboard. This has happened to me a few times! About shoes, the material is too hard.

you could. but a hamster ball is dangerous for a hamster so it most likely be dangerous for a gerbil as well.
