That actually depends. Does the gerbil look sick? Has it been acting strange lately? Does your child have an allergen to rodents? Is your child allergic to anything that might be in the food? If you answered yes, then I would suggest taking her/him to the doctor, just to be safe. If the gerbil looks fine, then no. I myself have been bitten by a gerbil, and I'm completely fine. I wouldn't worry about it, just put some disinfectant ointment on it, and I'm sure He/she will be okay. You can put a band-aid on it if you want, kids love band-aids. well...swollen back could be anything...even a blood clot, an std, or some cracks inside of your skin which could be causing this. if it is a short term swelling, then you should just put ice on it, but if the swelling persists then you should heat it in some way. one thing that definetly works is sitting in the bathtub in warm water... i hope this works, but i would recommend going to the doc. for immediate help.

Most definitely. Unless you are planning on breeding the gerbils, i recommened getting 2 male gerbils as they are generally less territorial and less aggressive then the females. Make sure you have the necessary equipment before adopting or buying your bundles of joy.

I would not recommend it for two main reasons. If you already have an established pair who have been living together for a long time you shouldn't attempt to introduce another gerbil, this will result in the pair 'ganging up' on the single gerbil, fighting him, injuring him and this may lead to his death. Even when using the split cage you should never attempt this.

Secondly if you do have three unknown gerbils the since the split cage requires equal exposure and living space for all the gerbils it would be hard to build a cage like this, I'm picturing some kind of triangular or circular with sections cut out, which is quite frankly awkward. As well as this you may find that two of the gerbils pair whilst ignoring the other. When they are in a split cage as a pair they can give their full attention to each other but in a three it would be very risky.

I would suggest pairing two of your gerbils and adopting another for your other little guy. Please do not buy a single gerbil from a pet shop if they have an even number of gerbils. This is because you will be breaking up a pair to try and create another pair which might not even work and leaving a single gerbil on his own.

Change the shavings in the cage every week. Gerbils cost between $7.00 and $15.00
