At day seventeen newborn gerbils will open up their eyes, they will have most of their fur as well then. Gerbils do not require dust baths like Chinchillas. If you are able to get a gerbil to try it then use a dust bath formula from a pet store. In my experience they don't like baths.

With experience (i have two), I have found that they eat whatever and whenever they want. Just supply it with loads of food and water, they don't hoard it or stuff their pouches like hamsters. A gerbil dust bath is actually making use of chinchilla dust and sands, available at places like Petsmart and Petco. Pour a couple of inches of the sand into a bowl and place your gerbil in it. The gerbil should run and roll around, kicking up dust, making a mess, but getting clean. The fine dust captures dirt and grease that may be on their fur and leaves their coat shiny and smooth! It keeps their coat clean by removing grease and grub from it. Gerbils should always have a special place for digging in which helps to keep their fur nicely maintained. For a dust bath, use chinchilla bathing sand in a container. They will dig and roll around in it and it will keep their fur clean

Please note that this is the only type of bath you should give your gerbils, as water will rinse off natural oils that insulate the gerbil and it could get sick or chill to death!

Go to the petstore and buy some meal worms and gerbil milk. Then feed them the milk through a really small eyedropper and give them drops until they wont take it. (hold them lightly between 2 fingers while you do this) as for the meal worms, I don't know but I think you just leave it next to them. Make sure you do this constantly, and that they are always completely covered in clean warm bedding, kind of like a cave. Ehen you know you can't feed them yourself like when you're at school or something, soak a small piece of bread in the milk then set it next to them before you leave. I hope I helped.

I would take it to a vet right away. When gerbils don't eat it's usually a bad sign.

A sick or ill baby gerbil looks normal...Sometimes. BUT, if they hardly move a lot, don't nurse, and their exposed skin becomes pale and/or scaley; that shows they are sick. Sick baby gerbils also let loose a lot of mucus from their noses. Feel the babies nose to see if it is wet. Baby gerbils that are sick also tend to drool.

Dehydration is lack of needed water in the system. They will become very lethargic, possibly having diarrhea or 'wet tail'. You must provide a water bottle (ones you can buy at a pet store) all the time, lukewarm and working all day, all night, 24/7. A dehydrated gerbil, although they are traditionally desert animals are domesticated in homes and do require more water than in the wild. So to be blunt, death is the result from dehydration or illness. A quick way in an emergancy to rehydrate a gerbil is to make a mixture of 50 percent water and 50 percent karo syrup then use an eye dropper and drip it on the gerbil's lips, but keep it away from the nose otherwise you could seriously injure the gerbil's lungs and cause a respritory infection. The gerbil should lap it up a little.

If the gerbil mother is not staying on her pups long, she may be feeling stressed. If she leaves them to go scratch in the corner often, or if she is moving the nest a lot, this might be a sign of stress. If her tank is not wire, cover one side of it with a towel to give her some privacy. If it is wire, dim the lights in the room. Put a lamp light on one corner, not to close, just to barely warm up one side of the tank for mom. However, as long as the pups have milk beans in their tummies (if they are still that young), and are not dying off, it will be okay. Gerbil pups are pretty tough! If they are still younger than three days and you do not see milk beans, you may need to buy kitten replacement milk and feed them through an eyedropper three times a day.

Go to the emergency room! You have an abscessed tooth, it sounds like, and this can be very dangerous, as the nerve channels can conduct the infection to the brain, causing death. It is time to visit the ER. First wash out your mouth well with warm salted water to cleanse the abcess as much as possible. The doctor on staff will probably put you on a bout of antibiotics.
