Can the cyanide in Almonds give you a stomach ache?

User Avatar
Only the bitter variety, called flowering almond and planted decorative purposes, has sufficent cyanide to harm you. The bitter almond has a pink flower. The sweet almond tree has white blooms and the fruit contains no cyanide. The nut has a strong bitter taste and it is dificult to ingest more than a single one. Even that could give you a mild stomach ache. Both varieties contain a chemical pre-curser to cyanide which can become poisonous under damp conditions.

Does eating peanuts aggravate arthritis?

User Avatar
Yes, peanuts and peanut butter can aggravate arthritis. I was a peanut butter eater all my life, I am now 58. I would have starved to death if nobody had invented peanut butter, it was my main diet many days. Now I cannot eat peanut butter, it aggravates my arthritis. I tried almond butter and it was a lot worst than peanut butter. I find cashews bad too.

How do you make almond oil?

User Avatar
Almond oil can be procured from both bitter and sweet almond kernels. Though the bitter almond is not edible like the sweet, the resulting oil is nearly identical, and both can be used in cooking as substitutes for olive oil if necessary. Almonds contain mono-saturated fat, healthier type of fat which may be useful to lower blood pressure.Use almond oil in moderation, as like all oil, almond oil also contains high fat and calorie.

Is a macadamia nut the same as a hazel nut?

User Avatar
A macadamia nut is not the same as a hazel nut. Hazel nuts are sometimes called filberts or cobs. A macadamia nut is a very hard-shelled nut which is very tasty either raw or roasted. It is native to the eastern coast of Australia, where it is popular, either eaten alone or in cooking. The macadamia nut is also known as the "Queensland nut" or, in some area, "bauple nut" (pronounced "bopple").

Asked in Nuts

How long does it take to toast pine nuts?

User Avatar
It obviously depends on the method and equipment, but generally only 2-3 minutes. The best way is simply to put them in a pan, dry, over medium heat and shake them gently as they brown. The built-in oil content in the nuts makes it a quick process. Important: There are literally about 15 seconds from the time they look perfect until they begin to burn, so the best approach is to stand right there without taking your eye off it.

They can eat any nut meats. Almonds would be an expensive treat. No need to take the skin of the almond off, they will eat that also. It would be a very bad idea to feed them salted products of any kind.
