Is there an actual breed of miniature German Shepherds or a hybrid breed of such a dog?

  • No there is not a miniature breed. German Shepherds Dog Breeders and Societies prefer to keep the bloodlines clean. There are times when a German Shepherd may mate with a smaller breed of dog, but this has nothing to do with dog breeders. My brother has a dog that is part German Shepherd and Border Collie.
  • Yes there are hybrids of German Shepherd dogs ... Shiloh Shepherds, King Shepherds, Shepadoodle, Alasken Shepalute etc.......'
  • Technically there is no such thing as a miniature German Shepherd, but a lot of breeds are being miniaturized. They are miniaturizing Staffordshire Terriers, Border Collies and various other breeds, but most are not officially recognized as show dogs. ALL true German Shepherds are just that and to miniaturize a breed it means mixing that breed.
  • In checking about this question I discovered this answer "Dwarf German Shepherd Dog. This is not a miniature version of the breed, but a genetic defect that can cause multiple health problems and is referred to as pituitary dwarfism. It appears to occur in many different families, and afflicted dogs require lifelong veterinary care to maintain health and coat. Dwarves are usually identifyable at birth, and are not simply runty animals stunted by health issues. Secondary problems include pannus, thyroidism, allergies and poor coat. Many can become nearly bald with age, and none grow much larger than 20 or 30 pounds. The temperament of dwarves however appears unaffected, and they show the character typical of their family. If well cared for, they can live a long and happy life, and make a charming companion."

What is the disposition of a German shepherd and blue heeler mix?

Heelers are bred to herd wild cattle and they do that by "heeling" or "heading" which means they nip at the face or the heels of the cow to get it to go in the direction they want. They tend to be thick bodied and shorter than your average dog. They also tend to be very tough -- they'll hurt themselves and not fuss or yelp about it which means, if you've got them outdoors a lot, you have to check them out periodically to make sure they're okay. They are also sometimes called "velcro" dogs because they want to be with you all the time; this can mean they're not always okay with visitors (unless you make sure to socialize them) and they may invade your personal space (rather than lying in other room or being okay out in the backyard alone). They really want to please but they are very busy so they need lots of exercise and a "job" (this can be herding cattle or regular walks and/or learning to do lots of tricks/an agility course.) They have a strong bite and can be a bit snappy. They also will herd no matter what so it's important to train them otherwise your back yard BBQ will end up herded into a corner without anyone realizing!

German Shepherds are also very smart (used for police dogs and all kinds of other stuff that requires intelligence and skill). They can be talkative and stubborn but they aim to please. They're also high energy, but not quite on par with a heeler. They're bigger than a heeler, and I'm sure you've seen them.

I have a ACD/German Shepherd mix and she's very busy like a Heeler, a little talkative (she whines/fusses) which is like a German Shepherd, and is very smart like both (knows the names of all her toys, opens doors, will "go find" my other dog if I ask her to, never falls for the drop-the-ball-behind-your-back trick etc.). She's a pretty good mix of the two visually -- a bit too tall for a heeler, too short for a shepherd and she's got big paws like a shepherd with the speckled markings of a heeler. I would say the combined tempermant is super intelligent, eagar to please, and very busy (like a heeler) and I can't imagine that trait wouldn't come out in a heeler-anything mix. I'm not sure if it's just her or if it's the tempermant, but she is always very happy in the mornings -- if the family doesn't get up by the desired time she will tackled/cuddle/lick everyone in the household until we all are up and/or bring toys to us that she wants to play with.

I hope this helps - obviously your heeler/shepherd might vary from this - but I imagine that a lot of those traits will be similar. Heeler-anythings are a handful -- but are wonderful and if you love dogs, have the time train them properly and spend time with them I would recommend it. My little lady is a busy gal, but she's a delight.

Why is your 9 month old German shepherd puppy showing signs of being pregnant?

Well, she could be pregnant. Most dogs start going into heat at six months. If your dog is spayed then it must be something else, duh. Does your dog get out of your yard occasionally or do male dogs come into your yard. If so then i hate to break it to you but dogs can get pregnant that early, it doesn't mean they should though.

How do you determine how big your Australian shepherd puppy will get?

A normal, purebred Australian Shepherd will generally fall within the sizes listed on the Aussie breed standard. A male is generally 20-23 inches high at the shoulder, and a female is 18-21 inches high. Weight can vary from around 45-55 lbs for females and 50-65 lbs for males.

Is jumping up and snapping a sign of aggression in a puppy?

== == * Yes. Even if you startled the dog most dogs will jump, but do not snap. Some puppies will mouth a person that may appear to be snapping. It's playing, but gently and firmly any puppy should be trained properly. There are good courses to go too to train you and your puppy or there are good CD's out by: Cesar Milan (Dog Whisperer) that is an excellent choice to train your puppy. A puppy is much like any baby of any species (including humans) and are not aware they are being rough so it's up to the owner of the puppy to say 'No!' Then push the puppy away. Some larger bred puppies are more aggressive in play and the owner has to teach them what is playing and what is aggression and when that aggression should be used (protecting you home or family.) If the puppy is still continuing this type of aggression (growling, then snapping) it's highly advisable you take your pup for a thorough check-up by your vet to be sure there are no problems making the pup feel this way (could be in pain.) If there is nothing physically wrong with your pup then you can use two methods to stop this behavior: A light pat on top of the nose with two fingers and the word "shame" or "stop" and when they do praise them or use a clean spray bottle with cold water and when they start to snap give them a sprinkling in the face with the water. It doesn't take long. Along with letting them know who the boss is in the house and lots of love your pup should do just fine.
