Why is one under par in golf called a birdie?

Over a century a go "bird" was a word used to describe something good, like cool is today, it is believed back in 1899 in Atlantic city a pretty good golfer called Ab Smith was playing with some friends. On the last hole he hit his shot to a few inches of the hole on his approach and called out "That was a bird of a shot!" He then made the putt. He and his playing partners subsequently decided to call a score one under par a birdie.

If you are on the green putting, and your ball strikes the pin in the hole or the ball is holed you receive a two shot penalty (Stroke play) and you play the ball as it lies. Or loss of hole in matchplay.

How to choose which tee height to use for tee off?

A good rule of thumb for a driver is to have the equator of the ball at the top of the clubface. If you have a modern "Volkswagen on a stick" driver you will need 3" tees or longer. Fairway woods might be a little lower, long irons lower still, and by the time you get to mid- to short irons, just give yourself a good lie.

What do you do when your ball rests on a rake in a sand trap?

No, you are not allowed to do so, you must not rake the bunker or smooth sand over with your feet, as this is deemed to be improved your stance or testing the ground conditions. You will get a two shot penalty for testing, if you do so.

A lateral hazard is simply one where it runs alongside the hole of play, but does not actually cross it. It is also deemed by the committee of the competition/course or tournament that it is impossible/ impractical to drop behind the line of the hazard (which you would normally do with a normal water hazard).

Who shoots first when up to the green and one ball in on the fringe?

The order of play is determined by proximity to the hole. Whether the ball is on or off the green is irrelevant. The player whose ball is furthest from the hole plays first.

Is it illegal to putt with the end tip of a flat putter?

No, as long as it is an r&a accepted club, any stroke made includes all faces of a club as when you hit a drive off the toe or a wedge from the heel even if you strike a ball with the shaft it is part of the club and hence even if accidental counts as a legitimate stroke

How many provisionals can you hit without being stroked?

Well in a strokeplay competition you could stand there all day hitting until you get one in play (unless you want to pick up, and therefore have an NR). In Stableford you could pick up if you have hit two provisionals and have not got the ball in play, unless you want to return a gross score.

The old hole should not affect your line at all, as it is simply a flush piece of turf, you would not get relief from this.

When can you take relief from a sprinkler head?

If the ball is actually on it or if the sprinkler head interferes with your stance in any way also if water is coming out of it causing "casual water"

Free drop within one club length no nearer the hole depending which of the above applies

On the tee you play 2 bals out of bound how do you count the stroke on yr next balls?

If you hit the ball out of bounds, you must still count that shot. Also, for every shot that is hit out of bounds, there is a one stroke penalty.

So if you hit two balls out of bounds, then that is 4 strokes, and when you tee off again, that will be your 5th stroke. Hopefully that one stays in! :)
