The R&A visited and liked the design, they later decided to adopt it as the official size of a golf hole. The reasons why Musselbrugh's members had made it that size remain unknown.

The forecaddy would stand out in the fairway and wait for the balls to be hit from the tee, so they could be found. As soon as the player hit the ball, the caddy would shout "fore", a shortening of the word forecaddy, to let him know the ball was coming.

Put the ball forward in your stance, and take your normal swing. Some people do however like the imagine a long low take away. With a fairway wood you do not need to necessarily hit the ball into the ground like you would with an iron, but you can do so.

In recent times probably Corey Pavin (US Open 1995), and before that most likely Paul Runyan (USPGA - 1934 and 1938). Pavin averaged about 250+ yards with his drives, and the archives indicate that Runyan was around the 220+ yards mark.

Comparisons between the two are a bit hypothetical given the differences in technology.

They were both excellent golfers in their prime and made up for their slight builds and comparative lack of length of the tee with unerring accuracy, canny course management, and great short games (no pun intended).

The best way is to go to a local pro shop or golf shop, and hit a number of drivers and see which one gives you the best flight, distance and spin rate. The lower the spin rate obviously the more distance you will get. It is however a combination of both the head and the shaft.

Generally if you are just beginning i would suggest a 10.5 with a regular shaft. But if you have a very high ball flight you may want to go as low as 8.5, a mid flight with say a 9.5 and if you have a normally very low flight you may want to go to a 10.5. The shaft flexes go by swing speed, a regular is for slower speeds, a stiff is for faster speeds and an x-stiff is for very fast swings.

The most common combination for amateur golfers is a 9.5 stiff, but you should really try and number of drivers out as you notice the difference greatly.

You get a shot on the holes as determined by the stroke index or handicap as set on the score card. So if your handicap is 9, you get one shot on each of the holes ranked 1-9 on the stroke index or handicap index. Using your handicap, you get a shot on the hardest holes 1 being the hardest and 18 being the easiest.

You don't need to achieve any handicap to turn pro. A 28 handicapper or a +5 can. To become a teaching pro you need to pass a playability test, which is two rounds and you have to shoot under a certain score, it varies from location to location but it is a few over for each round. There are also written tests etc. To be a player, you just need to qualify and try and win your card.
