How do you calculate your handicap in golf?
Instructions:
Step 1
Play five rounds of 18-hole golf or take the scores from your last five rounds of 18-hole golf. The five rounds are what are commonly used to calculate a handicap. If you were to take the scores from more or fewer than five rounds, there would be a different formula and it would not be as accurate.
Step 2
Consult the scorecard or call the course clubhouse to find the rating and slope for each course you played during the five rounds. This might seem a little odd, but not every course is as easy as the next. You might shoot 5-under par at an easier course, but at Pebble Beach, you might shoot 15-over par. The difficulty of the course has to be taken into account to measure different golfers against each other.
Step 3
Take the scores you shot at each course and subtract the golf course's rating from that number. Make sure to use the correct course rating for each score or your handicap will be skewed--and not necessarily in your favor.
Step 4
Get the product of each of the five numbers you calculated in Step 3 multiplied by 113. The 113 is the universal number used for official U.S. Golf Association handicaps, although it might seem a little arbitrary.
Step 5
Find what is commonly referred to as the golf differential by dividing each of the five numbers you have after steps 3 and 4 by the slope rating of the courses.
Step 6
Take the lowest of the five numbers you calculated in Step 5 and multiply by "0.96." Once you have this number, disregard any decimals after the second number and this is your golf handicap.

Where did the golf term 'fore' come from?
As today players many years ago had caddies, and each caddy had a "forecaddy", the forecaddy would assist the caddy. The forecaddy would stand out in the fairway and wait for the balls to be hit from the tee, so they could be found. As soon as the player hit the ball, the caddy would shout "fore", a shortening of the word forecaddy, to let him know the ball was coming.

Who was the shortest to win a golf major?
In recent times probably Corey Pavin (US Open 1995), and before that most likely Paul Runyan (USPGA - 1934 and 1938). Pavin averaged about 250+ yards with his drives, and the archives indicate that Runyan was around the 220+ yards mark.
Comparisons between the two are a bit hypothetical given the differences in technology.
They were both excellent golfers in their prime and made up for their slight builds and comparative lack of length of the tee with unerring accuracy, canny course management, and great short games (no pun intended).
How do you determine what degree golf driver is best for you?
The best way is to go to a local pro shop or golf shop, and hit a number of drivers and see which one gives you the best flight, distance and spin rate. The lower the spin rate obviously the more distance you will get. It is however a combination of both the head and the shaft.
Generally if you are just beginning i would suggest a 10.5 with a regular shaft. But if you have a very high ball flight you may want to go as low as 8.5, a mid flight with say a 9.5 and if you have a normally very low flight you may want to go to a 10.5. The shaft flexes go by swing speed, a regular is for slower speeds, a stiff is for faster speeds and an x-stiff is for very fast swings.
The most common combination for amateur golfers is a 9.5 stiff, but you should really try and number of drivers out as you notice the difference greatly.
How is your golf handicap applied by hole?

Using your handicap, you get a shot on the hardest holes 1 being the hardest and 18 being the easiest.
