How do you update Google Maps?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In 2006 Google Maps was updated to use the same satellite image database as Google Earth. Before that Google had to update and process imagery for both Google Earth and Google Maps where the maps where often out of sync with each other. Now Google updates its central map & imagery database and the updates are made available to both Google Earth and Google Maps at once.

The time between getting imagery from satellite and seeing it on Google Maps is far from real-time. Once the imagery is taken by satellite, it takes time to process the data by a commercial provider like GeoEye before it is available to Google and other customers. Google will do additional processing to convert imagery into the format and coordinate system of its internal databases. This is one reason you normally won't find any imagery younger than about 6 months.

For these reasons, the Google map & imagery database is updated once or twice a month.

When was Google Earth first released?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Imagery Updates

Google Earth imagery updates usually happen about every 2-3 weeks but the updates are not to the entire globe but to cities and regional areas often in multiple countries. Google provides a KML feed to show where the updates are located and also has a notification service to receive alerts when your selected areas have been updated. See related question for details.

Google Earth Software Updates

Google Earth software is usually updated several times a year with a major update (e.g. 6.2 -> 7.0) about once per year.

How do you use street view in Google Earth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Street View in Google Earth 6 and 7:
Drag the orange "pegman" icon from the navigation control (on upper-right corner) onto the map to enter Street View mode. Also if you're looking at ground from low altitude then double-click on a building or ground to enter nearest Street View photo from that location.

Note you must be closer than 500 km (eye altitude level) for the street view "pegman" icon too appear.

For detailed usage of Street View see the Google Earth user guide which includes a tutorial using Street View (see related links below).

How often is Google Street View updated?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The images in Google Earth (and Google Maps) are updated on a continuous basis. It's hard to say exactly when an area will be updated because some areas may be updated more frequently than others (just because that data is more readily available). While most images are no more than 3 years old in high resolution areas, low resolution imagery in some areas may be older. When high-res or newer imagery is not available, the base map used in Google Earth is a circa 2000 TerraMetrics/NASA 15 meter resolution base imagery.

It takes months of post processing new imagery before they go online so bulk updates usually happen about every 2-3 weeks. Google Earth and Google Maps share the same backend satellite image database and are updated together.

Why are newer images sometimes found in Historical Imagery?

Newer imagery is sometimes available in 'Historical Imagery', which can be enabled from the View menu option in Google Earth. Sometimes older images are actually of better quality than new images (i.e. there might be a huge cloud over a certain area which encourages using the older, clearer image). This feature is not available in Google Maps.

Where was Google Earth imagery last updated?

If you want to see where Google Earth (and Google Maps) imagery was last updated either check out the Google Earth Blog for update announcements or simply click on the 'Google Earth Imagery Updates' link below to see the highlighted areas on the globe.

When will my area be updated?

Due to overwhelming demand when a given area will be updated Google has created a new e-mail notification service. Check out 'Follow Your World' in related links below.

Why does Google earth black out the middle of Antarctica?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are a number of causes of graphical issues in Google Earth.

In some cases you just need to clear your local cache and restart Google Earth. Another workaround to switch from DirectX to OpenGL Mode (or vice versa) and/or try running in safe mode.

You may have to reinstall Google Earth or get the latest version.

Why resolution of Goggle Earth images vary place to place?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The imagery used in Google Earth and Google Maps comes from a variety of sources ranging from satellite & aerial imagery to imagery taken from air balloons. Some of the imagery is given to Google by city or state governments. The age of the imagery varies greatly (from several months to 5 years) and the older imagery will have a lower resolution due to technological improvements.

This imagery comes from a variety of vendors each from cameras with different resolutions and quality. Google performs extensive post-processing to stitch and blend the imagery together. It's hard to fathom what a massive project updating the Google imagery really is and the costs involved.

Short answer: there is no one source of imagery covering the globe at all levels (national, region, local, etc.).

How get real-time pics of Google Earth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The aerial, satellite, and Street View imagery in Google Earth is not real-time (or live). But there is also a webcam layer integrated into Google Earth (enabled in Gallery layer) that can show "live" scenes at selected locations.

What is the purpose of the left mouse button in Google Earth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hold the left mouse button down to pan the globe in the direction the mouse moves in Google Earth.

Hold right mouse button and move mouse to zoom in/out.

Move mouse up to zoom out and down to zoom in or use the scroll wheel.

Same mouse controls also work in Google Earth plugin within the web browser.

How often does Google Earth take pictures?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Really depends on the source of the satellite imagery.

Google for examples purchases or leases its satellite imagery from a number of imagery providers such as GeoEye and DigitalGlobe. Google updates it imagery on Google Earth and Google Maps once or twice a month but not the entire globe at once.

Bing Maps (previously Live Search Maps, Windows Live Maps, Windows Live Local, and Microsoft Virtual Earth) is Microsoft's web mapping service. New updates are released on roughly a monthly basis.

How can Google Earth just disappear from your computer?

User Avatar

Asked by Clyde2

In some cases the desktop shortcut icon to launch Google Earth on Windows computers disappears possibly to due to glitch in auto-updater found in Google Earth versions 6.0. The latest version Google Earth v6.1 announced to have fixed this problem. If it disappears you can 1) manually recreate the desktop short-cut, 2) run a small utility downloaded from google's web site, or 3) upgrade to the latest 6.1 version.

Is there any other software like Google Earth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are alternatives to Google Earth such as NASA World Wind from a desktop application perspective.

Google Earth is available as a free and paid Pro version (no source code is available). NASA World Wind is open source project and source code is available. World Winddiffers from Google Earth in that there is no one and 'official' World Wind application, instead there are many demos and programs with different functionalities created both by NASA and users from around the world.

For high-end GIS users ESRI sells a suite of 2-D and 3-D Map-related products (ArcGis, ArcMap, etc.)

From a web browser context there is Google Maps, which is integrated with Google Earth and shows some of the same map data. No download or installation is required.

There is also Microsoft's Bing Maps, formerly known as Virtual Earth, with their impressive "bird's eye" aerial photos.

Other mapping web sites with satellite imagery are also available. See related questions and related links for more details.

Where is im a celebrity filmed on google earth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

> I believe its just off the Gold Coast in Queensland just South of Brisbane. That is correct. We see each evening that it is QLD as the time shown on TV is 10hrs ahead of GMT whereas the rest of Eastern Australian is GMT +11 If you search for rainforest then head S from Brisbane down the Gold Coast towards Coolangattaand the NSW border and then inland.

The Queensland National Parks of Lamington, Springbrook and Numinbah are in that region. Perhaps the filming can't be done in a National Park but could be close by.

The filming team do not publicise their location of course to avoid in situ fan clubs and thus hindrances. **Meanwhile, I found out that the filming location was in Springbrook NP and the candidates and nearest & dearest are housed in the Palazzo Versace Hotel on Surfers' Paradise nr Southport QLD **

Check out https://www.epa.qld.gov.au/projects/park/listing.cgi?region=68

which has a handy map and pics of those NPs

NOTE:

Queensland Tourism is concerned that the programme portrays Australia and Queensland as a place full of snakes, rats, mice, critters and other nasty creepy crawlies. As the programme doctor says on a video, he is brought in with the various critters needed for the programme. I have been in Western Australia 5 times and never saw a redback spider and I have been in Queensland 4 or more times and never even saw a snake.

I did see cane toads up in sugar cane country Bundaberg and a #7 iron is the best thing to have for them. Some idiot imported them some years back to cure one cane problem and now they are the bigger problem. You should cover your eyes with glases if you play golf with them however ;-). Seriously though - they need culling. Gari

Why are the Google earth trees blury?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Trees on Google Earth are blurry typically because the satellite that took the picture doesn't have enough resolution to get a clear picture of the ground from space. To get around this problem Google creates 3-D computer-rendered trees to look like trees in areas where tree should be.

Where does Google Earth go once you have downloaded it?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When you download Google Earth it usually is saved in the temporary file folder unless you explicitly picked the download location. The Firefox web browser, for example, provides a downloads window showing what was downloaded and where it was saved locally.

Next, you run the installer (e.g. GoogleEarthWin.exe) to install the application.

Which Google Earth version supports the highest resolution?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Most land areas in Google Earth are covered in satellite imagery with a resolution of about 15 meters per pixel and highest resolution is 1 inch per pixel. At the highest resolution of once-inch resolution where each pixel represents one inch (or 2.54 centimeters). It won't appear blurry until you descend below 50 feet or so.

Most of the high-resolution imagery is aerial photography taken from aircraft flying at 800-1500 feet rather than from satellites.

See KML in related links to see examples of each resolution.

What satellite helps us locate places on earth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based satellite navigation system that consists of a series of satellites used for locating places anywhere on or near the Earth. GPS became fully operational in 1995.

There are also a number of satellites that take high-resolution imagery of earth including GeoEye-1, QuickBird, WorldView-1, WorldView-2, and others. High-resolution images combined with a precise location can help to locate any place on the planet.

How do you join paths on Google Earth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In edit mode of Google Earth you could take one point of one line segment (path) and extend it to the intersect with other line such that the two lines appear to be a single line. However, there is no automatic way to merge the two lines into a single feature.

To merge two paths into a single Placemark you need to manually edit the raw KML and move/copy the coordinates of one into the element of the other line.

Here's an example with a KML file having two line paths which need to be merged.

OLD KML:

east

-122.431885303019,37.8019316061803

-122.431762847554,37.8019476932246

-122.431719843168,37.8017374462006

west

-122.431719843168,37.8017374462006

-122.431841863906,37.8017213314352

-122.431885303019,37.8019316061803

The merged KML would look like this

east-west

-122.431885303019,37.8019316061803

-122.431762847554,37.8019476932246

-122.431719843168,37.8017374462006

-122.431719843168,37.8017374462006

-122.431841863906,37.8017213314352

-122.431885303019,37.8019316061803

Note when you manually paste the coordinates it's hard to debug and identify which points on the map are in which order in the list. To help debug editing the points a free online is available to generate numbers corresponding to the order of the point in the list. Click on related link below and paste your KML into the form.

How accurate is Google Earth Live?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Google provides access to large amount of aerial and satellite photography from across the globe through Google Earth and Google Maps. The map imagery is not simulated nor computer generated so the data you see is "real" as-is the traffic and weather layers that Google provides.

That does not mean all KML content found on the Internet is "real" or accurate data. The data is as good as the source.

Free Google Earth download for Windows XP?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Google Earth 5.0 and higher runs on Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

For Windows XP and older computers if Google Earth 7.x doesn't work then 6.2.2 is probably the best bet to try.

Note as of Google Earth 6.0 the older 5.0 is no longer available for download on Google's direct download page, but you can still download versions 5.1 through 7.1.

Can you get real-time imagery in Google Earth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Imagery and photos including Street view photos in Google Earth (or Google Maps) may appear real-time (or live) but it is NOT and often takes months of post processing before new imagery becomes available on Google Earth/Maps.

This is one reason why you usually do not find any imagery younger than about 6 months in Google Earth/Maps. Updates usually happen about every 2-3 weeks and only to particular areas not the entire globe all at once.

While the imagery is not real-time, Google is making some layers such as traffic and the cloud weather layer available near real-time and refreshed every few hours.

There is also a new webcam layer integrated into Google Earth that can show "live" scenes at selected locations.

Also, there are third party data feeds such as real-time flight tracking available.

How do you find out which version of Google Earth you have?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Normally Google Earth Pro auto-updates to the new version when it is available but if that feature is disabled or not working you can manually install the latest version. Visit the Google Earth download page to download the latest version for Windows, Mac, or Linux desktop platforms. You can show the version of Google Earth in the Hep menu and selecting "About Google Earth". Note that Google Earth desktop has been replaced with Google Earth Pro so all updates will be with the latter.

For the web version of Google Earth, your web browser always accesses the latest version and you never have to install or uninstall the application.

Mobile platforms can update Google Earth using the Google Store, Apple store, or equivalent application management utlility on the particular platform.

Does Google Earth need the Internet to function?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

For those of you wondering what happens to Google Earth (GE) when you don't have an Internet connection, the amazing thing is that it will work. But, it only works with what you have installed in your cache. If you anticipate taking your laptop somewhere where you won't have a broadband connection, you can still use GE for a limited area of viewing. Or you can use it for doing a demonstration somewhere without an Internet connection. First, go to the menu item Tools->Options and select the "Cache" tab. You can make the cache size as large as 2000 MB (i.e. 2 Gigabytes). This will give you more data to work with. Then, you need to move to the area you want data for and zoom into that area. The most recent things you have looked at will be what's in your cache. I think you need to turn on the layers for the information you want cached as well (for example, 'roads' or 'dining'). You also might want to turn on any of your placemarks related to the region you want to look at. It doesn't take much of an area to fill up the cache. Especially if the area you are viewing has lots of high-res pictures. But, I read about someone using this in the remote areas of Africa with a GPS and a laptop to find his way around. There is also a tip that you can save your cache(s) under different files and then swap them out to look at different areas. Could be useful if you were travelling without Internet access for a prolonged period of time.
