Why is there no ice on Google earth the north pole?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Both poles the south and the north melt during summer periods. The north pole melts at a higher rate than the south. In recent years the north pole has become increasingly thinner. In 2008 it was just 3 metres, in 2009 it is down to 1 metre. Scientists predict by the end off the 2009 summer period there will be very little ice at all. Google earth is just showing this natural seasonal pattern.

Can you look at a older time with Google Earth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In Google Earth select 'Historical Imagery' under View menu. This shows a timeline slider from which to select available satellite and aerial imagery allowing you to travel back in time to see how things looked in the past.

As of GE 6.0 there is time indicator in the status bar [lower-left of the map] showing the oldest imagery available.

For example, if you're in London then you can jump to 1945 to see WWII imagery.

3-D Building layer

Note that the 3-D building layer are current buildings and not associated with any particular time period so you may want to turn off this layer otherwise it may not match well with the older imagery.

Newer Imagery

Sometimes there are actually newer imagery available in Historical Imagery due to Google's quality control process such as the newer image having more clouds or other defects making the older image "better".

Street View

Street View is not yet available in Historical Imagery to see older photographs.

How do you import GIS file in Google Earth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When you select a map in 'My Maps' there should be a 'View in Google Earth' link in upper right that you can click.

Google has removed the 'View in Google Earth' link from the Google Maps options, however, you can still transfer it to Google Earth. First click the link icon then copy the URL under the 'Paste link in email or IM' label. Next, append "&output=kml" to the URL (without the quotes) and open it in your web browser to launch Google Earth.

UPDATE:

Note that this trick has been removed as of August 2012 and Google Maps no longer supports the undocumented output=kmlparameter.

Google has documented how to share data from Google Maps to Google Earth - see related link below.

How do you create circles in Google Maps?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are a number of free third party tools to draw circles and produce KML that can be viewed in Google Earth.

With some such tools you can create a circle of a fixed radius at a center point by latitude/longitude. Likewise you could dynamically draw a circle at the center of your current view and redraw itself every time you move then stop.

Google Earth Pro can draw circles with the Ruler tool but the free version of Google Earth client does not support this so you must use a third party tool.

See related link below for a free online circle generator where you can specify a center point and radius or auto-draw a circle wherever you're looking at.

How do you update Google Maps?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In 2006 Google Maps was updated to use the same satellite image database as Google Earth. Before that Google had to update and process imagery for both Google Earth and Google Maps where the maps where often out of sync with each other. Now Google updates its central map & imagery database and the updates are made available to both Google Earth and Google Maps at once.

The time between getting imagery from satellite and seeing it on Google Maps is far from real-time. Once the imagery is taken by satellite, it takes time to process the data by a commercial provider like GeoEye before it is available to Google and other customers. Google will do additional processing to convert imagery into the format and coordinate system of its internal databases. This is one reason you normally won't find any imagery younger than about 6 months.

For these reasons, the Google map & imagery database is updated once or twice a month.

When was Google Earth first released?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Imagery Updates

Google Earth imagery updates usually happen about every 2-3 weeks but the updates are not to the entire globe but to cities and regional areas often in multiple countries. Google provides a KML feed to show where the updates are located and also has a notification service to receive alerts when your selected areas have been updated. See related question for details.

Google Earth Software Updates

Google Earth software is usually updated several times a year with a major update (e.g. 6.2 -> 7.0) about once per year.

How often is Google Street View updated?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The images in Google Earth (and Google Maps) are updated on a continuous basis. It's hard to say exactly when an area will be updated because some areas may be updated more frequently than others (just because that data is more readily available). While most images are no more than 3 years old in high resolution areas, low resolution imagery in some areas may be older. When high-res or newer imagery is not available, the base map used in Google Earth is a circa 2000 TerraMetrics/NASA 15 meter resolution base imagery.

It takes months of post processing new imagery before they go online so bulk updates usually happen about every 2-3 weeks. Google Earth and Google Maps share the same backend satellite image database and are updated together.

Why are newer images sometimes found in Historical Imagery?

Newer imagery is sometimes available in 'Historical Imagery', which can be enabled from the View menu option in Google Earth. Sometimes older images are actually of better quality than new images (i.e. there might be a huge cloud over a certain area which encourages using the older, clearer image). This feature is not available in Google Maps.

Where was Google Earth imagery last updated?

If you want to see where Google Earth (and Google Maps) imagery was last updated either check out the Google Earth Blog for update announcements or simply click on the 'Google Earth Imagery Updates' link below to see the highlighted areas on the globe.

When will my area be updated?

Due to overwhelming demand when a given area will be updated Google has created a new e-mail notification service. Check out 'Follow Your World' in related links below.
