Here is the way to generate an elevation profile between two points on Earth, which gives you a fair approximation in the altitude differences.
Click Add on the Google Earth Menu bar, and select the Path . Or alternately you'll do the same thing by pressing the combination of Ctrl+Shift+T.
A New path dialogue box appears for you to enter the Name of Path you want to designate and write some description for the same.
Then browse to any location of your interest and click at a place and release the mousse button and go to another place and click and release the mouse button. You'll see a line drawn connecting these two selected points.
Now, click OK on the bottom of the New Path dialogue box, to close it.
On the left side menu go to places and right click on the Path you created and select Show Elevation Profile to see the graph displaying the cross section of the path between the selected two points.
