Who built the Great Wall? There are many answers. Some say Emperor Qin Shihuang. Some say ordinary working people of ancient China, and some say that it was slaves who built the wall. This is not an easy question to answer, just like the wall was not easy to build.

Experts have given us the most credible answer. As early as the Warring States Periods (476 BC - 221 BC), the ruling powers began to build walls as a defense against the northern nomadic tribes and other potential enemies. The state of Chu (11th Century BC-223BC) was the first to build a wall, followed by the Qi, Yan, Wei, Zhao and Qin. After Emperor Qin Shihuang unified the six states, he ordered General Meng Tian to connect the existing walls and to extend them further as a front line defense against possible invasion. Thus the Great Wall was formed. It extended from Lintao (present Lintao County in Dingxi City in Gansu Province) in the west and ended at Liaodong (present the eastern and southern parts of Liaoning Province) in the east. It was called "Wan Li Chang Cheng" (The Long Wall of 10,000 Li).

Plastering is an art which takes time to master it. Yes you can plaster yourself but it will take you a lot of practice to get a good smooth finish. If you want to give it a go you will need a multi finish plaster for normal walls, PVA, an old paintbrush, a bucket for mixing plaster, a float (the rectangular tool to spread the plaster on the wall) and a tray to use with the float.

Once you buy all those bits then you need to mix the paster to a smooth mouse like consistency, PVA the walls before you start then begin plastering once the PVA becomes tacky to the touch. Normally the first coat of plaster will be applied quickly and does not have to be a perfect finish, then once this dries to a stage where you can place a finger print in the paster (not too sloppy or dried hard), then you add the second coat of plaster which will be the final finish.

If you only need to do a couple of walls I would recommend hiring a professional as its very difficult to get it right. Watch the professional and learn how its done before attempting it yourself.

Qin Shi Huang the first emporer of China built the 'Wan Li Qang-Qeng' (10,000 li Long wall) or first great wall of China 2000 years ago. This was the Qin dynasty.

It has been said that millions of people have died during the construction of building the great wall of China. There is not a specific number, but according to research thousands and thousands of men have died, and maybe even millions.

The Qin dynasty of the First Emperor is credited with joining and extending the Walls of China: 221 BC to 207 BC. Many States of China along it's Northern boarder built walls independently prior to the Qin Dynasty. After the Qin Dynasty united China the wall was competed. It was made by craftsmen, prison laborers, and soldiers.

It became a world heritage site in 1987. It is the longest structure ever built and it is made all by hand. As well as it shows how China was ahead of their time when it was built. It also shows human interaction with nature.

Great Wall of China can be written as 長城. In pinyin it is chang cheng.

The Great Wall was constructed to help defend against invaders, like the Mongols.

The architecture (framework) is strong and it was skilfully built.

When you are at a lower elevation than the Wall, or in aerial viewing, it can be seen for many miles. Otherwise you will lose sight at the local horizon. For viewing from Space, you would need binculars and know where to look, because unlike many man-made things (roads, cities) it will blend in with the countryside when seen from above.

The Outcome of the great wall

Positive:

* It is now a tourist attraction and boosts commerce for China.

* It protected China from their attacks.

* It gave the Chinese time to perfect their defence and system.

* It also made it easier for Qin Shi Huang Di to tax the people of China.

* Thousands of people died in the process of the construction which was also a major effect on the Chinese people of the time.
