What is the time line of the Catholic and Orthodox churches?

Both the Orthodox and Catholics started at the same time, in the year 33 AD, when there was no such thing as Orthodox and Catholic, and there was only the Universal Christian Church. So they both shared a common foundation for the first 1,000 years of their history.

The year 1054 AD is generally regarded as the final date of the split in the Universal Church, which began to separate from the year 800 AD when Charlemagne set himself up as a rival king to the Eastern Roman Emperor. The year 800 marks the beginning of the separation between the Latin West and the Orthodox East, which concluded in 1054 with the mutual excommunications by Cardinal Humbertus and Patriarch Michael Cerularius of Constantinople in the Church of Hagia Sophia.

From 1054 the Western Christians became known as Roman Catholics and the Eastern Christians became known as the Orthodox Church.

I was baptized a Roman Catholic but confirmed Orthodox and I married a Greek Orthodox can I have my nephew baptized in a Catholic Church?

Since you are confirmed Orthodox and married a Greek Orthodox, the Orthodox Church requires that any children you may have should be baptized Orthodox.

Also, as an Orthodox, you are not allowed to baptize your nephew or any other person in a catholic church. From the Catholic point of view, unless your nephew is to be reared a Catholic, he may not be baptized in the Catholic Church. If he is to be reared Catholic, either by his parents or godparents, the Church will receive him.

No you are GREEK orthodox u must not I reapeat not baptisma your child at a catholic church.

If a childs name is Jessica what would she be christened as in the greek orthodox church?

Hi, I have a niece whose name is Jessica. She is named after my mother whose Greek name is Thoukissa. A very common name from the island of Symi in the Dodecanese. Another variation of Thoukissa (Doukisa) is also Thikea (Dikea) for which I named my daughter Justine. A more complicated explanation is I took the word DikeaStretched it to Thikio (which means justice) and took it from there. But if you want a real biblical name, according to the Book of Saints (Greek Orthodox) the name Jessica is a variation from the greek name Ieska. Hope this helps

What is the nymphios service in the greek orthodox church.?

"Blessed is that Servant whom He Shall Find Waiting" An Exhortation to Vigilance Sermon on Vigilance by Fr. William Chiganos "Be dressed in readiness," Jesus begins in Luke 12, "and keep your lamps alight" (v. 35), because at any moment, He can step through the door of history and return to us for good. As His bride, will we be eagerly waiting for Him? Will He find a ready home and a tender, welcoming heart? Or will He return to an empty, run-down house, where people grew tired of waiting and moved somewhere else? -- A place where the people He people He loved forgot all about Him? Will He find joy or uneasy surprise? Jesus, of course, would rather find joy. Let's look again at His counsel in verse 35, so we can live in bright anticipation instead of trembling dread:

"Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps alight."

What religion should you choose for your kids if your wife is Greek Orthodox and i am not?

I fully understand your dilemma. Both churches have so much to challenge and feed a young mind and give sustenance throughout life. Add to that the family pressure and you are in a pressure cooker without a safety valve. But whyshould you choose? I'm assuming that for your wife to have kept her religion you must have either been married in her church or had a civil ceremony. But I could be wrong. If so I hope not to have caused any offence. Education notwithstanding, as if you intend to send them to a catholic school the argument is moot, both religions have similarly strong themes in terms of the trinity, Christ's ministry and doctrine, but are variant in dogma. I know it is seen, traditionally, to be be the 'right thing' for you to bring them to Christ in your faith, as it is for your wife in hers, but your marriage is not traditional and neither therefore need the religious education of your children be. Don't be cowed by family pressure. The important thing for you both is that the children are brought to Christ. In which church that happens is between you and your wife, they are your children and He is the same Christ. The dogma can wait. It is better that the children are brought up in a balanced and loving environment. Choose their sponsors/godparents from both sides of the family and make your wishes known. Teach the children your combined values, that which you believe and know to be right. Alternate your observances between both churches if you like, but answer their questions without bias. With Christ's help and your guidance they will chose the way that is right for them and you will be proud. The above is my personal view as a free thinking christian with no particular religious affiliation. Yes I have children. Yes they have found their own paths. Yes they have grown to be honest, strong and faithful to Christ and to themselves. Always remember that God said, "This is my Son in whom I am well pleased." not this is my son who is catholic or this is my son who is greek orthodox. Having a particular badge does not make you more christian; just more isolated, if you let it, from those who wear a different badge. If I haven't helped at least I've given you something to think about.

Why do greek orthodox have a 40 day service for someone who died?

At the memorial services family members and loved ones pray for forgiveness and mercy for the soul of the deceased. At the Last Judgement, to be held at the time of Christ's second coming, the soul of the deceased will be cast into either an ultimate state of blessedness or damnation. Memorial services enact the belief that prayer can intercede in the granting of forgiveness, thereby providing rest to the soul of the deceased.

The most widely observed memorial service, Mnimosyno, is held on the Sunday closest to the fortieth day after the death. According to Orthodox belief, Christ remained on earth for forty days after the resurrection.

This memorial service, at which the priest prays for forgiveness for the deceased, is part of the regular Sunday church service. Relatives and friends attend the service and family members sit in the front row. The family provides a tray of kollyva - boiled wheat prepared with sugar, walnuts, cinnamon and other spices. Using icing sugar and almonds, the kollyva are decorated with a cross and the deceased person's name and placed on a table with candles at the front of the church.

Kollyva represents the soul of the deceased and symbolise everlasting life. Wheat represents the life cycle of death and regeneration. At the end of the service the kollyva are distributed to the congregation and people attending the memorial service are invited to join the family for a meal. The meal shared on this occasion is similar to the one served at the time of the funeral.

What is a difference in decoration between church and synagogue?

Instead of having los of statues like in the church they have tapestries and absoluteley no statues at all in the synagogue.

Another point that leads away from decoration is that they don't say God in the synagogue. They say G-d or Adoni as the name is too sacred.

They also have the difference in readings such as the Bible in the church and the Torah in the synagogue.

Hope this helped :D
