What were the reasons for gunpowder plot?
The Gunpowder Plot was intended to blow up the English "House of Lords" while the King was conducting the state opening. This would have killed or injured the King, most of his Ministers and the Members of both houses. This would effectively have destroyed the government of England, and left Scotland without a king and several important figures in attendance at the English Parliament.
The resulting chaos throughout Britain would have permitted a Catholic Rising to replace James with his Daughter and possibly reverse or alter the Reformation in favour of the Catholics. However the plot was not particularly well organised and probably wouldn't have got that far even if the gunpowder had gone off.
How was the gunpowder plot revealed?
The gunpowder plot was discovered when a member of Guy Fawkes' gang wrote a letter to one of his friends that was going to be in parliament on the day of the plot, telling him to stay away from there and why. The friend showed the letter to parliament, and they then sent guards to search the houses. In one of the cellars they found Guy Fawkes, ready to light the fuse.

There are lots of reasons to believe that the gunpowder plot was set up and lots to believe it was a genuine plot. read the book 'the making of the UK 1500-1750' it has quite alot of information and sources on page 56-59.
Guy Fawkes was baptized an Anglican. He converted to the Holy Roman Church after Trent and served against Elizabeth I in the attempted coup in her later life. He became involved in Roman Catholic plots against James I and took part in what is known as the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. This was an attempt by Romanists to wipe out the English establishment including all but one of the Royal Family. The exception was the future 'Winter Queen,' Elizabeth of Bohemia! She was twelve years old and her fate was to be married to a future Roman Catholic contender for the throne after her Father and brother were wiped out by the plotters.
Interestingly, James was quite prepared to give toleration to Roman Catholics; after all, his mother was one. He considered himself to be a Catholic,, not a Roman, but he was a strong follower, or believer, in the Ecumenical Councils of the early church of the first thousand years and only opposed the post Trent Church. His wife, Anne of Denmark was one, so he was no enemy. All he asked was that they took an oath of loyalty to the Crown as everyone else did. The Romans were for the most part quite willing, but the pope denied them permission! Guy Fawkes was a Roman Catholic, a sightly different thing!

Details of the gunpowder plot:
On 5th November 1605, two years after the death of Queen Elizabeth I, soldiers discovered a man called Guy Fawkes in a cellar under the Houses of Parliament. With him were at least twenty barrels of gunpowder. Guy Fawkes was arrested and tortured. At last he gave way and told his torturers about a plot to blow up Parliament together with the king, James I, his ministers and Members of Parliament. Fawkes was a Roman Catholic who had been angered by the failure of King James, who was after all the son of the Catholic Mary Queen of Scots, to grant more religious toleration to Catholics. He had joined with a group of four other Catholics led by Robert Catesby in the plot to kill the king. Catesby had made the mistake of inviting other Catholics to join the plot. One of these was called Francis Tresham. Tresham wrote a letter to his brother-in-law Lord Monteagle warning him not to go to Parliament and Monteagle told the government. The plot was foiled at the eleventh hour; some of the plotters escaped, some turned King's Evidence and reported on the rest.
The unlucky Fawkes was taken in chains to the Tower of London and beheaded at dawn. He was hanged, drawn and quartered. After Guy was hanged, he was drawn (drug) through the streets of London behind a horse cart. At a public venue, he was then chopped into 'quarters'. The charge was treason, though some people in England prefer to remember Guy as "the only man ever to enter Parliament with honest intentions." In 1606 Parliament agreed to make 5th November a day of public thanksgiving and ever since then it has been known as "Guy Fawkes Night", with people all over Britain letting off fireworks and lighting bonfires. To this day, one of the ceremonies that accompany the opening of a new session of parliament, is the searching of the basement. Parliament somehow made political capital out of the close call, and poor Guy Fawkes is burned in effigy every November 5th on bonfires.
