Guyana is known as the "Land of six peoples". The main ethnic groups in Guyana, in order of their immigration, are: Amerindians (the indigenous people of Guyana), Europeans, Africans, East Indians, Portuguese, and Chinese.

The traditional dress of the Amerindians depends on what tribe they are from. The costumes generally consist of grass skirts, calabash bikini-like tops for the women, and some form of headdress. The traditional dress for the Africans is usually made from bright and bold african prints -- the women wearing dresses and colourful headdresses, the men wearing dashikis (or at least that's what I've heard them being called back home; a simple google search should help you to get a better idea). The East Indian women wear saris, salwars, and ghararas and the men wear kurtas. The Chinese women wear silk (or silk-like) dresses in traditional Chinese form with Chinese floral patterns, the men wear the same as jackets and pants. I have never seen the Portuguese or the Europeans in traditional wear, so I cannot say what is typical for those groups.

Guyana is part of mainland South America. It is bordered to the east by Suriname, Brazil to the south/southwest, west by Venezuela and north of Guyana is the Atlantic Ocean.

Spanish explorers noted the coastline of the Guianas around 1500. Sir Walter Raleigh explored parts of Guyana in the 16th century, encouraged by stories of "El Dorado" - a land where gold was plentiful. The first Europeans to colonise Guyana were the Dutch, who settled in Demerara area, Essequibo and Berbice. The British also had settlements from around 1700 and formed British Guiana in 1831. The Europeans came to Guyana to build their empires, for new lands to culitivate crops such as sugar and rice, using slave labour and later "indentured" labour, and to profit from the land and industry. So the main reason for colonialisation is to make money, to find new markets, to take advantage of slave labour. But other reasons are to explore the world and to enjoy sunnier climates.
