The answer is a definite, no. PAL stands for 'phase alternate lines', which means every other scan line on the TV is of the opposite phase in relation to the NTSC standard. IT really looks bad when viewed on an American made TV.

60Hz means that the image is updated 60 times each second. This is the standard refresh rate for television in North America, Japan and other regions that use NTSC color systems. In Europe, the refresh rate is 50Hz or 50 times each second.

A television will display an image at the refresh rate of the incoming signal. There are an increasing number of televisions that offer 100 or 120Hz refresh rates or even higher. The incoming signal is still updating the image at 50 or 60Hz but the television carries out complex calculations to create an image that would have been there if the camera had captured the intermediate image. Some are more successful than others. If the calculations are not carried out correctly, the result may look jerky. Done well, the image will appear to move more smoothly. The only way to judge is to look at the image on each television.

The principle of an up converter is very simple: take a standard definition signal, examine each pixel of it and then calculate what each pixel on an HD signal would look like if the signal was HD. Making that simple process actually happen is rather more complicated. Very powerful signal processors are needed to study a block of pixels of the incoming signal. Typically, the block will be four or five pixels wide and high. The centre of the pixel block is the position of the new pixel to be created in the HD signal. The pixels of the original signal that are closest to the position of the new pixel have the most impact on the new pixel. The further away the original pixels are from the new pixel position, the less they affect the brightness and color of the new pixel. Once the original pixels are assessed and the new pixel has been defined and stored away, the process is then repeated for the next HD pixel. There is far more to the process than is described but that is the principle of up conversion. The additional processes are used to generate images without hard, ragged or jerky edges and mis-shaped detail in the new image. The techniques have been developed over several decades and were first used to convert North American signals to European and vice versa. Some thirty years on and the conversion quality has improved dramatically. Despite the advances, up conversion is not an exact science and is not a perfect process. It is important to remember that HD signals contain about 5 times as much information as SD signals. Putting an SD signal through an up converter does NOT increase the amount of detail in the image. In fact, an up converter will actually degrade the detail very slightly. Fortunately, when we watch an up converted signal, it is quite common that we get an impression of a better image than the SD original.

Have been searching for this too, as JVC does not list the lt42pm30 on their website. If you download the owner's manual from JVC's website for the lt42p300, it lists the lt42pm30 on the cover page along with the lt32p300 (32"). The specs page at the end shows identical specs for both 42" tvs. The difference might be that the lt42pm30 is sold at warehouse stores and the lt42p300 at conventional retailers.

"RC" is likely to refer to "RCA", the yellow jack that carries composite video along with the red and white RCAs that carry stereo audio.

There are a number of devices to convert composite video to HDMI and are commonly available online at trading and auction sites. They are priced at around $30 upwards and most do a reasonable job.

Some are described as up-converters, delivering 1080 line resolution instead of the 480 line or 576 line resolution of composite video. However, don't be persuaded that they will give you HD quality. Although they convert to an HD format, the image detail will still remain the same as the original SD signal. The converters are useful if you only have an HDMI input available but they will not improve the image quality. If you have analog RCA inputs on the television, they will provide the same quality of image as the converter will provide.
