Head Gaskets and Valve Covers

Gaskets are seals between two mating pieces. Head gaskets are located between the engine block and cylinder head. Valve covers refer to the protective layer that keeps oil and dirt away from the engine.

dont slam brakes, foot off gas, steer straight! (point blank answer nothing more or less)

What causes the head gasket to break?

They do fail naturally but the some causes are engine overheating because of water pump failure, pressure problems in the head and water cooled oil coolers splitting and blocking the circulation leading us back to point 1.

Do you have a blowen head gasket?

A blown Head gasket can cause a number of things to happen to an engine.

---- 1 a loss of compression in one or more cylinders

2 Engine miss loss of power.

3 Water coming out of the exhaust.

4 the oil starts to turn white.

5 the water in the radiator spews upward when turning the engine over.

What does nm mean when doing torque settings?

"Nm" stands for Newton-meters, which is a unit of torque. It measures the rotational force applied at a distance from a pivot point, typically used in mechanical and engineering contexts. When setting torque specifications, such as on bolts or nuts, the Nm value indicates how much rotational force should be applied to achieve the desired tightness without damaging the components.

What does it cost and whats involved in replacing a gasket in the engine block?

I take it you mean the head gasket. Head gaskets are pretty cheap, but the labor is high. If it is a V 6 or V8 you may have to do only one side. A lot would depend on what engine you have. I don't know if it is a car, boat or what, so it is hard to say what all is involved. You do have to remove the head from the engine to install a head gasket.

How long after someone damages your car driving it do you have to report it?

As soon as reasonably possible, if its late or you're in a hurry when you notice it, you can go to the police station the next day. They'll usually just give you a piece of paper to fill out for the report. If you know who did it, you need to get their information right away though.

Can a tuneup cause a blown head gasket?

No, a normal tune up cannot cause a blown head gasket. A blown head gasket normally is caused by an engine overheating or by a defect in the gasket or head. If it happened right after a tune-up that is just a coincidence.

How do you know if your car has a cracked block?

A good clue would be water in the oil.

That said, just because you do not have water in the oil, doesn't mean the block is not cracked.

Have a good mechanic check the car.

Your truck does not overheat but can I still have a cracked block?

Yes you can.

A cracked block does not necessarily mean the car will overheat.

If a block is cracked at a coolant jacket then coolant will leak out and the car will overheat if the leak is bad enough.

If the leak is not very major or if the crack is at a point that does not have a coolant jacket then it will not overheat.

A cracked block could leak oil, compressed air/fuel, coolant, or nothing at all and still be cracked. -R. Mesyef

Can a blown head gasket cause a radiator to explode?

Most definitely. A blown head gasket can cause the temperature to rise and put back pressure into the radiator, therefore possibly causing the radiator hoses to blow, or even bursting the radiator.

How do I repair a cracked cylinder head?

Some may be able to be welded but most are unrepairable and need to be replaced.

What are the torque settings for cylinder head bolts on Ford Bantam 1.3i 2003?

BE SURE TO USE NEW BOLTS AS OLD ONES WILL BE STRETCHED. THEY'RE NOT EXPENSIVE.

The torque settings are 40N.m (29.5ft.lb) + 120 degrees for the bigger M11 bolts which secure the main part of the head & 15 N.m (11.06 ft.lb) + 45 degrees for the 2 smaller bolts in the timing chain section.

Procedure is as follows:

1) Starting with the middle pair of M11 bolts tighten to 30 N.m working outwards and criss-crossing as you go.

2) Repeating the same order, tighten to 40 N.m

3) Tighten the M8 bolts to 15 N.m

4) Turn the M8 bolts another 45 degrees (I made a paper template to hold next to the bolts)

5) In the same order as before turn the M11 bolts another 60 degrees

6) Turn the M11 bolts another 60 degrees to make total 120 degrees turned.

How can you tell the difference between a blown head gasket cracked head or cracked block?

If you suspect the head and/or the block, have them "magnafuxed" by a machine shop. On the other hand, as you're pulling it apart, check the head gasket and if it's shot, there is usually only the one problem.
