Head Lice eggs look a bit like dandruff or you know when you rub gel in and then a little while later your hair has white small dots. That's what they look like. If you don't want to catch any, don't share things that you put in your hair. Signs of having lice include severe itching around the back of your head and having a lot of dandruff. You may also notice differences in the texture of your hair, like it feels stiffer or somewhat "sticky."

No. You need a product made specifically for killing the lice, and you need to wash ALL bed linens, hats, scarves, etc., in very hot water to prevent reinfestation. Run your pillows (and things that can't be washed) through the dryer on high heat for at least 45 minutes to kill the lice. For items that can't be washed or run through a hot dryer, hang them on a clothes line in the hot sun for several hours.

What do lice do to you?

it doesnt; it just itches. you see, your hairs have little tiny vaginas on them, and the lice are supahorny. they impregnate your hairs, making them have babies and then the babies need food, so they eat the scalp, making it itchy. so they only get itchey.

Do lice lay eggs in anything but hair?

No. The egg (nit) is glued onto the base of the hair, near your scalp. It can't fall off accidentally. When it hatches (becomes a nymph), it needs to feed several times per day from the scalp (by sucking blood). An adult head louse can not live away from the human head for more than a couple of days at most, so newly hatched baby lice would have almost no chance of survival without a supply of blood to eat even if they did hatch off the head.

How do you get rid of wood lice in a house?

How long do head lice nits stay on your hair after you have killed them?

The only way to remove them is to use a special comb, called a "nit comb". You can get this at any drug store, or in the health and beauty section of any department or discount store. The comb has fine teeth in it, that pulls the nits from the hair as you comb through it. But it may take several attempts to remove the nits, and if there are a lot, and if your hair is very long, you may even have to cut your hair to get rid of all of them.

How do you know you have lice?

Lice can be seen if one looks closely. Also, they can be combed out (so they can be seen to confirm a diagnosis) with a special comb that has finely spaced teeth. Symptoms of lice: * Intense itching. * Lice on the scalp, the body, clothing, or pubic or other body hair. Lice can be 0.08 to 0.16 inches (2 to 4 millimeters) in size. * Lice eggs (nits) on hair shafts. Nits resemble tiny pussy willow buds. Nits can be mistaken for dandruff, but unlike dandruff, they can't be easily brushed out of hair. * Small, red bumps on the scalp, neck and shoulders. Compliments of the Mayo Clinic. A link is provided.

Does tea tree oil kill lice?

It has worked for us! My #2 daughter came home with adult lice in her hair. First I covered her head in baby oil. Some say mayo or petrolum but mayo can turn rancid and be a health problem for kidos. And petrolum well enough said.

Anyway, cover head with baby oil or coconut oil, wrap with plastic wrap leave on for at least 2 hours. I washed it out with dawn dishsoap. It may take 2 washings. Then I washed again with regular shampoo with 5 drops of tea tree oil. Go heavy on the conditioner. Then use a nit comb. I did find a wonderfull tea tree shampoo at the health food store called Jasons. The entire family now uses it on a regular basis.

Every morning I braid her hair and we have a 12oz spray bottle with water and 6 drops of oil in it with which I spray her hair.

I do also spray with hairspray occasionally. To keep the hair up and to keep lice from having a place to attatch.

We are now on day 5 and no more lice. I was lucky that in the midst of all this we went camping for 4 days. Lice couldn't live in the house with no one home.

If you have long hair, make sure you tie your hair up as well when washing or combing hair.

Why cant you itch your head when you have head lice?

Head lice have evolved with their human hosts since ancient times. No one knows exactly why we have them as they serve no identifiable purpose and are not known to spread disease.

There are 3 types of lice that have human hosts: head lice, body lice, and pubic lice. All are different species and exhibit different physical characteristics and life cycles.

Does lice get in colored treated hair?

Yes - colour of hair is not relevant to head lice.

How does someone get head lice?

Head Lice cannot jump and they do not live on other animals. You get them from head to head contact with another person. The lice crawl from their head to yours. If you get more than one louse and they breed, then you get eggs which hatch and you have an infestation.

Can lice live in chlorine?

Yes, because crabs can accually swim very well.

Whoever wrote that is an idiot. It's highly unlikely that lice will spread. Lice hold onto hair and do not let go when submurged.

People are constantly losing or shedding their hair. In my swimming pool, I clean hair out of the filter skimmer every day. Who's to say that the person with lice hasn't lost a few hairs that they are holding onto. Will they or could they survive long enough for another swimmer to come in contact with them?

Are lice bad?

In my opinion lice are extremely bad. They can carry diseases and are very embarrassing. If you have lice my best advice to you is to go to a drug store or pharmacy and get some medicine for it.

How do you combat head lice?

They make shampoo's and combs for the treatment of head lice or you could shave your head but that is a last resort Answer. You go to Walmart and buy the equate brand of lice shampoo and spray. You use it on everyone's head in the house, 1 bottle per person; 2 if they have very thick or long hair. You spray your car and rugs with the spray and you wash all bedding and pillows. If you have boys shave their heads and with girls cutting long hair can help but not necessary. If you don't do one of these steps you will have a re-occurrence. Be thorough and sterilize things with Clorox, like combs, brushes and bathrooms. Wash everything in very hot water with detergent and baking soda. Good luck.

There are several different ways to treat lice. The simplest is to use an over-the-counter preparation like Nix. Depending on how resistant the lice are in your area, the treatment product may need to be left on for longer than the time recommended on the package. It's not uncommon for it to be needed for 30 minutes or more. Be sure the hair is dry when the medicine goes on. The way these products work is to temporarily paralyze the muscles the lice need to breathe. Ultimately they die from lack of oxygen. But when lice are wet they have a self-protective mechanism and can hold their breath for 30 minutes or more!

Nix and similar products contain a pesticide, so I prefer using an alternative treatment if possible. At Stanford, we use regular shampoo mixed with three tablespoons of olive oil, one teaspoon of tea tree oil, and one teaspoon of rosemary or eucalyptus oil. (These oils can be found at a health food store.) We mix it all together, work it into the hair, and leave it on for 30 to 60 minutes under a tight-fitting shower cap. We seem to get good results with this, though unlike Nix, there are no controlled studies to provide statistics on success. Also, eucalyptus oil is very poisonous, so it's important to be careful when using this mixture on children. It must be kept out of the eyes, nose, and mouth of kids. The most important part of treating lice is to carefully comb through the hair using a nit comb. However treatment is done, it is a good idea to repeat it a week later just in case one louse survives. One louse lays three to ten eggs per day so a child could get re-infested quickly.

Since lice can also live on bedding, clothing, and toys, and can jump right back on the kids after they have been treated, all of these things need to be cleaned or isolated for a period of time. Lice live on a very simple diet -- human blood. If they do not have access to blood they will die, usually within 48 hours, though sometimes they live a bit longer. If you close up your home and take off for the weekend, any lice left in the home should be dead when you get back and you can skip the huge cleanup!

If you were around someone with head lice can you catch it?
