Hera gave Heracles a madness that enraged him into killing his own children. Once cured of the madness, he realized what he had done, so he consulted an Oracle. The oracle, guided by Hera, told him that he needed to travel to the court of King Eurystheus. There, he was given the penance of ten labours, tasks which were meant to be impossible. In the end, two were added because he received help killing the Hydra, and he was paid for cleaning the Augean Stables.
