Yes, because the humidity needs to be a bit above average. Also, they sometimes prefer to drink out of a sponge. You need to have the sponge in a ocean-water dish that is deep enough for the hermit crab to submerse in. Thus giving a choice of drinking from the sponge, drinking from the water itself, or soaking in the dish - which helps with molting and gives the crab a natural option for bathing like he would have in the wild. make sure there are always BOTH fresh and salt water dishes in your crab tank - dechlorinated and de-metalled water is vital to your crab's survival! and the salt water should NOT be table salt! you need ocean salt - like oceanic or instant ocean found in pet stores for aquariums. table salt is harmful to hermit crabs.

no. their not endangered cause of all the babies a female has and most females have up to about...i think 40,000 babies but they are larva. so they are not endangered. i they were we probaly wouldn't have them with us cause they were endangered.

Generally, crabs feed on any other small fishes or crustaceans, alive or dead that they can catch. For fishing purposes, we use old, cut-up sections of stinky, dead fish. The odor attracts them to the crab net. Here in Oregon, a particularly vitriolic insult or threat is to call someone "Crab Bait". As in, "OK, nowyou're crab bait." (The threat) And, "Ugh! He looks like crab bait to me." (Not attractive and/or clean) :>)

You can tell a land hermit crab from a water hermit crab by looking at the claws/arms or legs. If it is a water crab it will be blueish and if land crab it will be pinkish purpleish. If your crab is a water crab don't just throw it in water and leave it there, put a tiny bowl in it's tank or cage that is low to the ground and make sure that the water level is a bit lower than the hermit crabs top of its legs. Also have a wet sponge for each kind of hermit crab in the crabs tank.

It all depends where you get the Hermit Crab from. I got two Hermit crabs when i got mine. I got two Hermit Crabs and two shells and plus all of the other stuff I had to save up about $230-$250 dollars just to be safe. Because you never know you might find something at the store that you think your Hermit Crab just HAS to have. I know I did. TIP: I have also found that PetSmart is a little bit cheaper than PetCo, especially if you have one of their cards. And it's not that much cheaper than PetCo, BUT in the long run it will eventually pay off. I know that it helped me out.

Not in a typical set up. Hermit crabs are scavengers, and even seldom documented hunters. They might attack your salamanders. Some salamanders also produce toxic chemicals which can harm a crab. Also, crabs need salt water, and salamanders have very sensitive skin. If your salamander wandered into the salt water by mistake, it would most likely die. It's not a good idea to house these animals together.

hermit crabs do get worms. the worms that inhabit their shells are known as polycheate (poly-keet) worms or bristle worms. they are not a pest, as they do not feed off the crab. the worms feed when the crab feeds, sharing it's meal. this is known as mutual respect. some hermit crabs actually have an anemone to ward off predators and in turn shares food with the crab.

Hi :-) If you would like to keep them for a long time then follow my steps: 1.They eat fruits and vegtables.But they love salad a lot.Atleast mine do..... 2.Change there food evreyday. 3.Give them 2 water boils.Why?Because they have 2 have regular water and salt water. 4.The best place to get 1 is Petco. 5.They love being outside.And if you want to play with them let them crawl all over youre shirt.It wont pinch you!But dont drop it! 6.I put my 2 hermat crabs with my pet tortoise.They dont hurt each other at all! 7.Be careful so if you have a tortoise or a hermat crab...It HAS TO BE IN WARM PLACES!They will die in cold places. 8.A 4 gallon tank is good for 2 or smaller.They will grow big.so by a bigger shell so they can go in it! 9.By more then 1 they hate to be alone. 10.They live for 80 years if you take good care of them.
