Because they give birth in the edge of the ocean, and we dont have the right conditions for it, it would be very difficult to breed hermit crabs. however, there is at least one lady who is trying to do so and has had some marginal success - so for now we are just waiting to see what happens. She had to have an ocean reef setup and cycled so that she could put the mature eggs in there to hatch and live until they can occupy shells. Hermit crabs are used to the tropics so they like a warm climate........ they prefer temperatures between 76- 82 degrees Fahrenheit while in their cage, but prefer 95-105 degrees Fahrenheit while basking in the sun. If your fish are going to mate, this will typically begin when the female is full of eggs. The male will chase her and poke his head against her side and belly in an attempt to get her to release eggs. If she does, the male will then release what is called milt in an attempt to fertilize the eggs.

Unless you have plenty of room to raise the fry, you can leave the eggs in the tank for a day as the fish will eat them, and any eggs remaining should be removed as unfertilized eggs will grow fungus.

If you have the room to raise the fry, then you need to remove as many eggs as you can to a small dish with tank water; there is no need to remove the goldfish from their tank.

They should only live in salt water if saltwater crabs, or freshwater if freshwater crabs.

Hermit crabs communication is very mysterious. We know that they make a clicking and chirping noise, especially when they are agitated. They also wave antennae at each other when they first meet but this could be just "feeling" each other out more than communication. So they do have the means to communicate but we do not know if they actually do it.

Some heat but not too much. I would recommend buying a hermit crab heating pad or a heating light. Just be careful because it could lower the humidity slightly, so you might have to spray the tank more often.

it lost its legs because of stress. maybe you had just gotten it; or maybe the temperature or humidity levels weren't good enough. Try to keep their cage between 70-82 degrees. if this is not possible you should spray their cage twice a day with lukewarm water. a couple squirts will keep the cage humid and the hermit happy!

Salt water hermit crabs need to live in ocean water that has been properly set up (like a reef aquarium). Land hermit crabs need access to both fresh and salt water but live the majority of their lives on land.

at the Colorado mills mall there is a place called hermit hut thqat is a good place. petco and petsmart are also good. i got 1 of my crabs at petsmart and the other 2 from earthbound trading company, that place is not a good place to get a hermit crab, it isn't even a pet it is a jewelery store that sells crabs. but petsmart is the best.

Yes they can. If it gets to hot the crab can get dried out. Usually water is the mostly makes the crab live. It can evaporate when it gets too hot and the crab will die. After all, you don't see hermit crabs in the desert.

You sure can, it would be best to sterilize it first. I suggest laying the sand out on a sheet and baking it in the oven for a bit. It'll kill the bacteria and give you a chance to remove any harmful debris.

I love playing with hermit crabs so i know. First you should know that they LOVE to climb so make a obstcale corse with rock and other stuff. Make a small pool for them but make it small so they don't drown. Have fun!!!!!!!!!!! :)

They say that a drop from about 3 feet can kill your hermit crab. If you dropped your hermit crab the first thing you should do is see if it's dead. It's body will look droopy and a dead hermit crab can start to smell like rotten fish. If your crab happeneds to still be alive but it's she'll is completely crAcked then gently scoop it up and put it into its cage with a bunch of shell options so they can pick a new shell.

Answer: It is eaten by the shedder for calcium to harden the new shell. The parts that remain (if uneaten) are quickly moved away from the lobsters' burrow so as NOT to attract predators. Other sea creatures will quickly consume shedded lobster shells, so you will never find a shedded lobster exoskelaton on the beach.

In that case, he needs darkness and the best thing to do is give him a hidey such as a cocohut or other shelter so he can keep himself in darkness. Never ever disturb a molting hermit crab if it can be avoided. if a crab does surface molt, it is vital that you section him off from any other crabs you may have. This includes keeping them from being able to dig down under a barricade, as a molting crab gives off a very enticing smell (which is not an issue when they bury to molt) which may attract other hungry hermit crabs who will steal the shed exoskeleton of the molting crab who needs to eat it to regain strength. The newly molted hermit crab is also extremely soft and vulnerable, and could also become a target of another hungry hermit crab.

Another view: Your pet hermit crab should molt under the substrate (sand, or Eco Earth, NOT calci sand, which hardens like a rock when it gets wet and dries, never use as a substrate. put in their food dish instead). There are occasions when the hermit crab will surface molt, but this is not normal. Most often there is not appropriate substrate available (as in having only gravel, which is NOT hermit crab friendly, they need sand) or the crab is unduly stressed. There are some videos of hermit crabs surface molting on YouTube, if you are curious, do a search and watch those.

A hermit crab should never be disturbed when it is molting, never ever dig up a burrowed hermit crab. Molting can take a couple of weeks up to several months. Just keep the tank temperature and humidity in proper hermit crab ranges, change out the food and water dishes regularly, and leave them alone. They need darkness to trigger the molting hormone. Molting is their most fragile time, and they can easily die if stressed or disturbed too much during molting.
