Where did the Hollywood sign get its name?
H. J. Whitley, one of the town's founders, claimed the name came from a mis-hearing of the accented English of an immigrant trying to describe his work as "hauling wood". In any case Whitley was of English-Scottish heritage and both holly and wood are symbolic of those countries so it's at least as likely that he chose the name to honor his ancestry. Another hypothesis is that the name was suggested to Whitley by the wife of one of the town's early investors.
The sign wasn't originally built to promote the city, nor did it read "HOLLYWOOD". It was put up in 1923 as a temporary advertisement for a real-estate development called "Hollywoodland". The sign soon became emblematic of Hollywood itself; it remained standing even though it was no longer needed by the developer.
By 1949 the sign was severely deteriorated. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce purchased it, removed the last four letters "LAND", and began the first of several renovations that have preserved the sign into the present day.
