Very hard question to answer. If you have to ask, then Yes you do need a vet.

Many small scrapes and cuts can be treated by a horse person, with knowledge.

Some injuries can be in an important spot or deeper, possible tendon issues.

Did the injury just happen, or has the horse been getting dirt and flies in an open wound for days or a week?....call the vet.

As a horse owner, when the Vet comes out, you get to help, so you do learn along the way.

But the horse may need stitches, antibiotics, etc. that the Vet has.

You pass another horse if there is another person riding a horse that is very close to you. If you pass that person you have passed that person already if the person passes you your question has been anwsered.

*You always want to pass a horse to the inside. If you are coming behind them, it is generally a good idea to give at least two horse spaces between the two of you, and let the rider know you are coming if they have not already heard you. If you are passing from opposite directions, let the oncoming rider know you are passing on the inside (assuming they are on the rail) and again give at least two horses space.

Exceptions are at shows if a horse has a red ribbon on its tail (means it kicks) and you want to give ample amount of room when passing.

You pass another horse and rider with "right shoulder to right shoulder". For example, if your on the right rein, then you should be on the inside. If you on the left rein, then you should pass on the outside.

A good type of horse for riding is one that is sound and can accomplish the type of riding you wish to do. A good horse should also match your riding level.. for example if you are a beginner chose a mount who is a school master (well trained) and not spooky to help you learn and gain confidence in the saddle. A good horse for riding is also a horse that can accomplish the task you wish to do while riding for example dont pick a horse that cant jump if you wish to be jumping courses etc.. So long story short all horses are good its just a matter of finding the horse that works best for what you would like to do.

A twitch is a device used to help control a horse. The most common twitch has a long wooden handle with a loop of chain or rope at one end. The twitch is applied over the upper lip and twisted until tight. This is supposed to cause endorphins to be released and make the horse relax, however most people do not know how to accurately use a twitch and wind up causing pain to the horse. Some people will also apply the twitch to the horses ears, but this is wrong and should never ever be done.

A horse can not live inside a farm house, it needs pasture to eat.

A number of breeds of horses have the Creme gene which produces buckskin, palomino and smokey black in the Crcr (heterozygous) state and Perlino, Cremello and Smokey Creme in the CrCr (homozygous) state. Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses, Morgans, Welsh Ponies, miniature horses, POAs, Appaloosas, Lusitanos and many of the warmblood breeds have the dilution genes to produce buckskins.
