Horses are an expensive hobby for some people today. Horse racing is still a popular spectator sport, mostly due to betting on the races. There are also people who raise horses for show and parades, people who train and ride rodeo horses and people who keep horses and ride for recreation.

Horses by nature are quiet animals, in part due to their role as prey. Horses suffer silently when they experience long term, chronic pain like arthritis, laminitis, and colic, unlike humans who have a variety of sounds to express pain , and dogs who generally express it as a whimper.

Horse sound are a bit nasally as they use their nostrils to generate sound. The sounds they make are anything from soft nickers that sound like nnnhehheh to loud squeals when angry. And when calling to a buddy at a distance they make a sound that sounds like NEEEEHAHEH, (you need to imagine that with a slight stutter.)

It is called a capped hock. A horse's hock is the same as a human ankle. Most likely if your horse has a large bump on the top of its hock, it has been injured in some way. On a horse that has not been injured there should be what appears as a small bump on the back of their hock, this is called the point of the hock. I would suggest consulting your vet about any bumps you find on the front of a horse's hock.
