Does it hurt when you break your finger?

Unless the finger is significantly deformed from a fracture, bone ends are protruding or palpable, or you can detect crepitus (and DON'T test for this intentionally!), you need imagery to accurately tell if a finger is broken or badly sprained. If you're asking yourself this question, it's a good idea to get it looked at. If it's not broken, they'll still treat it, which is not always super easy to do well yourself. If it IS broken, the orthopedic team can make and implement decisions about how to let your finger heal in a way that maximizes the chance you'll retain full range of motion and sensation. For first aid, immobilize the finger in such a way that it won't be hurt more. This may require splinting or taping it to the finger next to it. Guidelines are: * Dont make it worse -- be REALLY gentle. * If the movement hurts the patient, STOP. * Tape or splint in the position you found the finger -- don't try to straighten it out. * If you need to splint, consider padding the splint for comfort. * Elevate the limb -- you can also ice it (place in ice water 5-10 minutes, then out -- stop if it gets uncomfortable) IF the skin is not broken. * Once taped, make sure there is circulation below the tape -- make sure the finger doesn't turn white or purple, or get really cold (before icing it of course). * If there is indication of a loss of circulation, this problem just became an emergency -- get to a hospital fast.
