Demerol and Oxycodone are both shcedule II Drugs, but there is a difference in strength between the two. Demerol is usually used as a post operative pain medication while the patient is in the hospital, and it is also used when someone returns home after a serious operation. You have to keep in mind that even though there are so many pain medications avilable for a Dr. to prescribe, specific medications work better on certain conditions better than others.
Oxycodone is a more commonly used medication by Dr's. It is used for moderate to severe pain. For example, it may be used after having your wisdom teeth removed, or if you break a bone or hurt your back, ect..
An opiate for severe pain would either be OxyContin, Dilaudid or Opana but, most likely the last two since OxyContin has a huge stigma around it.

You will just end up killing yourself trying to get high from it either by liver toxicity since they put rediculous amounts of liver killing Tylenol in it, or neurotoxicity .

Most doctors refuse to prescribe it where I live, they just tell me to take aspirin or prescribe a real pain killer.
Hydrocodone is much much stronger and more addictive, however , some people still get addicted to propoxyphene somehow.
