Is it safe to take vicodin and flexeril if you are on doxycyline hyclate?
Yes, it is safe; however, Vicodin and Flexeril can make you very drowsy alone and together this effect is increased. No driving, alcohol, or anything requiring your attention until you know how these drugs affect you (and even then, no alcohol). Also, Vicodin has Tylenol in it - so do not take any additional Tylenol that you might have at home. Additionally, it has hydrocodone in it which can cause stomach upset/constipation. Taking the Vicodin with food can help with that. If you haven't already been taking doxycyline as a maintenance medication, know that it is best to take that on an empty stomach (if you can't manage that, just don't eat anything with a lot of magnesium, calcium, or iron in it at the same time such as dairy or a multi-vitamin) and that you will be more sensitve to the sun, so wear sunscreen. Also, if the doxycycline is a short term medication and you are on oral contraceptives (sorry, not sure of your sex or age!), use backup protection during the course of the medication. Long term users of doxy usually do not need to use back up as the body will adjust to taking bc and doxy together.

Yes. Crushing the pill into a powder and snorting it will defeat the extended release mechanism, and in addition, partially reduce the "first-pass" effect (this happens with most oral drugs; the liver partially breaks down active components before they are able to make it to the brain). The effect is similar to orally taken hydrocodone, but much more immediate (~30 seconds) and much stronger, both because of the more immediate concentration of drug delivered to the brain, and because the first pass effect is much reduced. The duration will also be reduced, often lasting as little as 60 minutes.
That said, pills often have other painkillers or binders that make up the bulk of the pill. These are typically very bad for your mucous membranes and airways. A safer method is crushing the pill, dissolving it in a small amount of water, and drinking. On an empty stomach the onset can occur within ten minutes and will be much stronger than taking an uncrushed pill (crushing and drinking defeats the extended release mechanism but still suffers from the first pass effect).
Be careful; all opiates are extremely addicting. Snorting hyrdocodone is not legal, and I doubt any pain patient would ask this question, so you are probably using for recreational purposes. I won't lecture, but take care and seek help from a doctor or drug counseling service if you start using too often.
No one should ever take any drug in a fashion other than what was prescribed, that being said, in the US hydrocodone currently is not sold in an extended release type pill. The government is currently reveiwing the approval of such a pill. But for now an extended release Vicodin or Hydrocodone will not be available in the US so if you have a hydrocodone pill, crushing it may or may not have a different effect but I would recommend only following the Rx. Which means only the person who's name appears on the Rx should be using it as prescribed.
