You can upset your stomach and/or cause ulcers with too much, however when I hurt my back the doctor gave me a prescription for 800mg of ibuprofen and I had to take it three times per day (that is 4 normal ibuprofen tabs) I just wouldn't take it for long periods of time. If you have that intense pain for that long, tell your doctor, and they will prescribe something else that will help much better.

Both carprofen (Rimadyl) and ibuprofen (Advil, MotrinIB, Nuprin) are COX-2 inhibitors, although carprofen is felt to be more selective in the canine. Both cause a decrease in glomerular filtration rate, although not in renal flow rate. However, ibuprofen in particular can cause potentially fatal stomach ulcers in dogs, is not predictably or well metabolized, and poses extreme risks in the face of volume depletion, such as after vomiting or with dehydration.
