The Ice Cream Parlor, Home of the Ice Cream MachineAt Mulch Island (accessable through Rum's Airport's WeevilAir flight trips) there is a small Ice Cream Parlor, home of the great Ice Cream Machine. The machine does nothing but make ice creams, although it is a strangley large machine that allows you to pick a flavour unlike the Ice Cream Machines (Mulchy Creams) in the locations in the paragraphs below. The Ice Cream GameActually, I do remember there being an Ice Cream Store somewhere at some point. It was something to do with an Ice-Cream game, but I don't think it's avalible in the Bin anymore. As I wasn't on Bin Weevils back then, I don't know, the game might still be avalible, the closest Ice-Cream referances in the Bin are at the beach of Mulch Island.

Any problems with soft serve ice cream machines?

I work at a place that serves soft serve ice cream, we are located outdoors, our biggest problem is that the machines we use are not made for the outdoors. We are open in the summer so it takes longer for the mix to freeze. The machines we use are at a baseball stadium, and we get extremely busy during the middle innings, during this time it is common that the machines cannot keep the mix frozen during this time, and we have to turn away customers. The main problem we have found is with the freezing of the mix.

How do Portable ice makers work?

Portable ice makers work like any traditional freeze ice maker. Water is pumped into the rotating ice tray. The compressor and fan then freeze the water into ice. Then a warm refrigerant causes the ice to be released into the bin.

What salt do you need for a ice cream maker?

Rock salt is cheapest, table salt works just as good. These will cool the salt and ice to about 10F.

There are other salts that will get the salt and ice mixture colder, but they are generally more expensive and harder to get in quantity.

If you want to experiment (and will be very very careful never to accidentally contaminate the ice cream mixture) you could test some of the "Ice Melter" products used on sidewalks in winter, some of these should cool the salt and ice somewhat below 0F. But these could be toxic!

How often does an ice cream machine need cleaned?

While in college I work in a place where I had to make milkshakes and each time I used it I ran hot water in the metal cup before using it again. You just put it up into the machine like you do for a milkshake but with water and not milk. This takes the leftover milk off the machine. Every night I emptied and cleaned the soft serve machine. I would take it apart, wash the parts, lay them out on a clean towel and cover them. The ice cream/milkshake mix would be emptied into a bucket to be reused the next day and stored in the walk in box overnight. This was done before cleaning.

Can you use other ice cream packets in a three minute ice cream maker?

No. I just called Redco foods who made the mixes when the maker was sold, but they no longer make them. Sorry. I have one too and wanted my grandchildren to be able to use it, but that's not going to happen now I'm afraid.

Why do you need salt on the ice when you can use ice cream maker to make ice cream?

"The salt makes the ice melt. the melting of ice requires input of heat and this 'sucks' the heat out of the ice cream mixture causing that to freeze."

You are correct. The salt lowers the freezing point of saltwater-ice mixture causing melting of the ice. Melting of ice is a process that absorbs heat due to the heat of fusion (80 cal/g of melting ice). Thermal energy is transferred from warmer (ice cream) to colder substance (ice/saltwater mixture). In this instance, heat is lost from the ice cream and transferred to the colder ice/salt-water mixture, allowing ice cream to freeze.

In 1846, a gal by the name of Nancy Johnson patented a hand-cranked freezer that established the basic method of ice cream making still in use today.
