How are igneous and sedimentary rocks similar?
They are all made of minerals. They are solid. They are part of the rock cycle.
Andesite is not any age in particular. Some deposites of andesite may be hundreds of millions of years old. However, since andesite is volcanic, some andesite rocks may only be minutes old.
What aren't you likely to find a fossil I metamorphic rock or igneous rock?
The fossils will be crushed under the pressures required to create metamorphic rocks and they will melt in the heat required to make igneous rocks.
What texture best describes an igneous rock that formed deep underground?
Igneous rocks that form deep underground typically have a coarse-grained texture, known as phaneritic. This texture occurs because the slow cooling of magma allows large crystals to develop, resulting in a rock that is granular and visible to the naked eye. Common examples of such rocks include granite and diorite. In contrast, igneous rocks that cool rapidly on the surface tend to have a fine-grained or glassy texture.
How could you explain the presence of an igneous rock in a bed of sediments rock?
The sediment from which sedimentary rock is formed originally came from other rocks that weathered away. In some sedimentary rocks, especially breccia and conglomerate, some of those rock fragments can still be identified. If it does not appear to be part of the sediment, there are a few possible explanations depending on their relationship. If there is a layer of igneous rock between sedimentary layers then it could be from a volcanic eruption that occurred during the time of sedimentation, or a sill that intruded between layers after they formed. If the igneous rock appears to cut through the sedimentary rock then it most likely is an intrusion. If there is a piece of igneous rock that happens to be in an area where the local bedrock is sedimentary then it may have been transported there by glaciers.
Why are rift zones a common spot for igneous rock to form?
The thinned crust in rift zones results in the formation of magma (molten rock) in the upper mantle, which then rises through the crust. As a result, rift zones often have active volcanoes, which form new igneous rocks.
What does adding fluids to a hot rock generally do?
Adding fluids to a hot rock typically induces changes in its physical and chemical properties. The introduction of fluids can lower the rock's melting point, promote mineral reactions, and facilitate the movement of tectonic materials. This process can lead to phenomena such as metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration, potentially resulting in the formation of valuable mineral deposits. Additionally, it can influence volcanic activity by affecting magma generation and eruption dynamics.
Can you see the crystals in basalt?
Not usually unless you have a microscope. Crystals in baslat are usually microscopic. However, in some cases basalt may have a porphyritic texture, where some minerals in the magma have started to crystallize before the eruption.
Will quartz cut glass like diamonds?
No. Diamonds cut glass because diamonds are harder than glass. Quartz is not as hard as diamond.
What must be present for magma to form into igneous rock?
Igneous rocks develops when magma comes through the crust and cools.
Igneous is an adjective, not a noun or a verb. It describes a type of rock that forms from the cooling and solidification of magma or lava.
The rock forms from light-colored lava?
Rhyolite or Rhyolyte (Cant be exact on spelling but its the thought that counts)
Pumice floats in water, but for other rocks you'd need to find a fluid that's more dense than the rocks to float them in.
For example, mercury is almost 6 times as dense as granite, so a lump or slab of granite will ride right up there high in a pool of mercury.
Will granite countertop edges be as shiny as the top?
They should be just as shiny as the top of the countertop. Some stones are difficult, others very easy to match. Resined stones can be a problem though. The resin affects the color of the stone, and since there is no resin on the edges, a color mismatch can occure. One of the cheats is to use wood stain or polyurathane on the edges. Ager, a very expensive stone coating is sometimes used. Regardless, any sort of stain or coating will eventually wear off with cleaning, so if you have a problem, have the fabricators return the top to the shop and repolish properly. Be sure an ask this question prior to purchase. Get it in writing on the invoice.
