How does in vitro fertilisation work?

IVF, which stands for in vitro fertilisation, is the process in which egg cells are fertilised by sperm outside the body. IVF is used when other attempts of fertility have failed as it is very expensive (it is also usually not covered by insurance). The ovulatory process is hormonally controlled and eggs are removed from the female's ovaries. The eggs are put in a fluid-filled tube and are fertilised by sperm. The fertilised egg is then transferred to the patient's uterus in the hope of a normal pregnancy.

The term, in vitro, is Latin for within the glass. This phrase was used as the name for the process because in early experiments for the development or enhancement of tissues outside the living organism from which they came, test tubes or petri dishes (all made of glass) were used. Now, the term, in vitro, is used to describe any biological process that happens outside of the organism they would originally be in. Normally, IVF is performed in a petri dish.

IVF may be used if the female has problems with the fallopian tube however it can also be used to aid in male infertility if the male has a low sperm count or other problems with sperm.

- IVF also carries the risk of multiple births.

- Most couples have a 75% chance of conceiving with 3 treatments.

well, think of when she missed her first period....then count back 2 weeks and there you go. this is the case since ovulation typically occurs 12-16 days after your last cycle. and then about 2 weeks after that you have your period. so just take when you missed your period and count two weeks before whatever the first day your missed period could have started....

yes - several women have undergone successful IVF after Essure coils were placed. In fact, occasionally we will place Essure coils in dilated abnormal tubes to help the infertility sub-specialists have a more successful IVF.
