No you don't because if you told the carrier your phone you jail broke your phone it could get bricked. Bricked means its deactivated and you can't use it anymore. Technically jailbreaking you phone is legal but if you buy any free apps with it then they brick you phone if they find out.

I've been running a test on mine, it's at 277.5 hours, which is 11.5 days, and it still showing 43% battery left. That puts it on pace for 486.8 hours, or 20 days. Note I have the brightness turned down to the minimum, the only thing running is the stopwatch, and I only check it a few times a day to make sure its still running, I am not using it for anything else.

If you don't use it at all, it looks like losing about 5% a day is a good rule of thumb, but since you need to not use it at all to get to this point, you'd be better off just leaving it turned off.

The SIM card will retain contacts from a previous phone.

The iPhone will not recognize SIM contacts until they are imported to the Contact list via Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Import SIM Contacts

The iPhone does not save contacts to the SIM card, and therefore if the SIM is from an old iPhone there won't be any SIM contacts present.
