I seem to remember my dad saying that he bought his from Sears around 1947. I understand that these rifles are extremely common and only worth about $60 in very good condition. My dad passed it on to me when he died. I'd never sell it. It is very reliable, accurate, and fun to shoot.

i have two of these gun ,one a standard pistol an the other is a derringer, both are 45 cal. ive searched prices here an they go between $70/$110 on the standard that is the one with a butt cap on it, and the derringer philadelphia for a $100 in both good condition, i dont know what to really do with these guns other then look at them, i know there blackpowder, no.11 caps, that would use a 44cal. or 45cal. check to see which will still role down, without a patch yet. these guns were given to me by my dad as hes in asisted living now, no guns aloud.....;) and this date of 11-2009 i still have them, denny97058@yahoo.com would like to move them i have a 44cal. ball/cap revolver too with hoslter..

If you mean as an example .270 Win, the Win stands for Winchester as they were the originator of the cartridge.

Crosman and Daisy made air rifles for Sears under the JC Higgins name. Yours is a model 400 Crosman. However you did not state the condition of the rifle so no estimate of value can be given. However yours was made between 1957-64.

It was made before 1968, and wasn't required to have a s.n. Most inexpensive guns didn't, as it only added to the manufacturing cost.

The 20 ga JC Higgins 103-370 was made by Marlin. It is the same gun as the Marlin Model 90. P437 is the serial number. P indicates the gun was made in 1957.

Prior to WWII sears sold the gun under the Ranger name.

It depends on what you mean by "rare". There weren't millions of them sold and they have no value as collector's items. On the other hand, they are extremely high quality and very accurate rifles. Because of the Sears association they sell for far less than they would if they were sold under the name of the FN factory that made the receivers.

So buy it if you need a good rifle and you will be very pleased. BTW, the 583.93 is a model code for a 270 made in 1951, not a serial number.

JC Higgins 41DLA in Excellent condition is Blue booked at $125.00; with scope add an additional 25%. Here is the kicker this is a collectible gun and are no longer made. If your gun is in excellent condition I have seen them go for $275.00. Again, collectible and in excellent condition.
