When did the production of the movie 'Avatar' start?
From original writing to release, it took about 15 years for Avatar to get to cinemas; the workings to create the movie itself took about 4 years.
James Cameron (writer/director/producer) had the idea and wrote an 80 page mini-script for the movie in 1994. Announcing in 1996 that he would begin making Avatar after the release of Titanic, Cameron was going to begin production in 1997 and planned to complete the film in 1999. Cameron soon decided that available technologies would not be able to properly create his vision, so he decided to put off making the film.
In 2005 Cameron began work on the movie again. The language development began, and in early 2006 he began work on the actual script, cultural development and components of his fictional universe. Principal photography began in mid 2007, with live photography starting in October of 2007. The official release date of the movie was December 18, 2009.

Avatar is a movie set in a fictional future where an Earth company (the RDA) is trying to extract a rare and valuable mineral, Unobtainium, from the moon Pandora, located in the Alpha Centauri star system. There is an intelligent race called the Na'vi which are indigenous to the moon. The movie follows a soldier named Jake Sully who assumes his dead brother's place in the AVTR program, where people neurally connect to a lab grown, organic human-Na'vi hybrid called an "avatar". In this body he attempts to befriend the natives to work out a peaceful mining solution. The Na'vi are a very spiritual people who have a strong connection to nature and their environment and are against the mining. Jake becomes torn between the ways of his own race and the deep beliefs of the Na'vi, and eventually betrays humanity. The movie touches upon the idea of how far humans will go to get what they want, no matter what the cost.

James Cameron had a very clear idea of what he wanted out of his film Avatar, even when he first wrote an 80-page scriptlet for it in 1995. Hoping to begin production in 1997, he realized that available technologies would not allow him to create what he pictured. Cameron therefore put the project on hold. In 2005 he decided it was time, and by early 2006 work had begun.
The movie is a combination of live-action shooting and photography, and CGI (computer generated imagery); about 60% CG and 40% live, according to Cameron. Many resources were allocated for the development, and even some new technologies created.
The filming took place in primarily two stages. About a month of motion-capture photography was taken in California, where Cameron used his "virtual camera system." This new motion-capture technique displays an actor in a digital surrounding in real time, allowing a director to make changes as if it were live shooting. Following this filming, production moved to New Zealand in October of 2007 for live action photography. A camera called a "simulcam," a combination of a 3D fusion camera and the virtual camera system, was used during live filming where CG elements interact with live ones. The camera can superimpose CG images over live action images, allowing a director to be able to tell an actor how to relate to the virtual images.
The computer generated and visual effects of the movie employed some very cutting-edge technology, as well as several new ones. New lighting techniques were used, as well as some new cameras. One camera, called "The Volume," was used to capture facial expressions for an accurate transition of an actor's expressions to their CG counterparts. The lead visual effects company was Weta Digital. The New Zealand-based company also did work on King Kong and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Creating Pandora and the Na'vi consumed over a petabyte (1,000,000 gigabytes) of storage. The final film footage consisted of over 17 gigabytes of data per minute.

When is the sequel for James Cameron's Avatar due to be released?
On April 22nd 2017, James Cameron made yet another announcement as to the release dates for his Avatar sequels. After several previous start / release dates, this time he claims the sequels will be released on December 18th 2020 for Avatar 2 & December 17th 2021 for Avatar 3. There will be a three year gap with Avatar 4 released on December 20th 2024 & the 5th on December 19th 2025.
As mentioned, with so many delays in production & release dates changes that came before there's no reason to believe these are set in stone but of course, time will tell.

In December 2017 it was announced Disney would be buying most of 21st Century FOX, a deal that should be finalized by the Summer of 2019.
On April 23rd 2018, he made a public statement that he was 100 days into shooting the first two sequels under his FOX deal. The Disney acquisition is important because the last two sequels will fall under Disney's review & if the first two aren't successful, there may not be third & fourth part.
They do however, have a stake in Avatar thanks to their 'Pandora: World of Avatar' at Disney World's Animal Kingdom, so it's entirely possible they'll agree to a third & fourth part.
