park mower on level ground or concrete.

lower deck all the way down to ground.

lay on your side on the right side of mower.

several locking pins need to be pulled out of their slots.

lay these to the side and do not misplace them.

one cable and washer on top of deck need their locking pin removed.

second locking pin needs to be removed from same cable guide way toward rear of deck.

this makes 4 pins in all from right side.

lay on left side of mower on the ground.

three pins on this side need to be remove in same manner.

raise height lever all the way back up and this will make it possible to clear mower when you slide deck out from under mower to work on deck .

after work is complete, slide deck back under mower as close to location it was in when you started.

connect all parts and reinsert pins in reverse order of how you took apart.

You first need to set the mower deck setting at high noon to read "blank". More or less between the 1" and 3.5" setting. Then pull deck release arm to allow for the deck to drop to the ground. Once locked into the down position, you need to release the U locks(that are spring loaded) located on the back half, and on both sides of the mower deck. This will allow for the arms that you have unlocked to be retracted up for clearance later. After that you must release the tension bar for the belt pulleys located on top of mower deck, left hand side, and remove the belt connected to the engine pulley located towards the front. After that, you must unlatch the front U-bar from the mower deck. After this is completed. Pull the mower Deck ARM back up, to the position normal for traveling. This will give you clearance to slide the mower deck out from the right side (chute side).

70 hours on machine . Less than 2 years old, maybe 2 hours of hauling light trailer 2x3' w/ brush.

Just started smoking 1/2 hour ago and burning oil big time . Don't know yet - probably rings , have changed oil and filter at recommended intervals Have not overfilled although quite a pain to measure/check I didn't.

I have a 1951 John Deere A that is seeping oil out of the one axle out close to the wheel. Do I need to remove the the rearend and the big bull gears and get to them from the inside? Paul Lehman

I don't know much about that model but on most riding lawnmowers, there's a pin on the back underneath the seat that shuts off the tranny (for pushing the mower similar to taking a car out of gear). Reach back there and release the pin & jiggle it a little to make sure it's not engaged and that should do the trick.

If that doesn't work, then you likely have a broken drive belt and/or pully. Take it to a repair shop or find a buddy who knows basic auto/engine maintenance.

When the transmissions in these tractors get worn, they will jump out of gear. Usually first and third gear will do this first, and if the transmission gets really worn other gears may jump out.

I have a JD LT 155 C.

I have replaced the solenoid and the mower still want start. There is 12 volts between the battery and the solenoid. When I test the voltage between the solenoid and the starter, the reading is 5 to 6 volts.

Why is there a drop in the voltage to the starter?

Yes it will fit.

Your STX-38 should have either a 12.5 or a 13 HP Kohler engine. Those engines have two studs that hold the exhaust to the engine. You should be able to pop the two springs loose on the hood hinge and take the hood off by un-hooking it from the 2 hood support brackets. Once the hood is off you will easily be able to see the two studs for the exhaust on the front side of the engine.

1. Remove the two 13mm self-tapping screws holding the main heat shield and set the heat shield aside.

2. Remove the LH [as you're facing the motor] hood support bracket [10mm] and put it aside.

3. Remove the smaller heat shield on the RH side [2 bolts, one 7mm, one 8mm] and put it aside.

4. Remove the 2 lock-nuts holding the muffler to the frame [13mm].

5. Remove the 2 flange nuts holding the muffler to the exhaust flange [13mm].

You should be able to slide the muffler out of the hole in the frame now by wiggling it a bit.

Reverse the steps to re-install after replacing the flange gasket.

Turn key anti-clockwise to the first position( Thermostart ) for 10 - 15 seconds. Turn the key further to the end and operate the starting motor. As soon as engine starts, turn key back to first position and hold in this position until engine runs smooth. Then release switch to "OFF" position.

It has to go throught the carb. Typically this is caused by a bad float. You will need to remove the carb and clean it or replace it.

i am rebuilding mine now.

according to local JD dealer, this is a non-repairable item (ce17392 not JD part number)

it would cost $582.00 just for the gearbox from dealer.

bearings and seals cost me to replace are $125.00 + 6 hours of my time.

Deere & Co. was using a letter system for its tractor models (John Deere A, B, & H) so they just used one of the next letters....G. (Also G could stand for "general workhorse" because of their huge horse power for the time it was built.
