I know for a fact that McCain normally flew F4 Phantom planes. I would assume that a pilot sticks to learning how to fly one plane really well and that McCain was an F4 Phantom pilot.

Now, why would they reassign McCain to fly a different type of Jet than he did on the USS Forrestal? The answer is, they didn't. He flew his last two missions with the same fighter type he flew on the USS Forrestal.
