1521 Ponce de León organized a colonizing expedition on two ships. It consisted of some 200 men, including priests, farmers and artisans, 50 horses and other domestic animals, and farming implements. The expedition landed on the southwest coast of Florida, in the vicinity of Caloosahatchee River or Charlotte Harbor.

It was the King of Spain that commissioned Ponce de Leon to start a settlement in Florida in 1521. The King of Spain at that time was Charles I. He ruled Spain from January 23, 1516 to April 12, 1555.

Very Little is known about his early life, but it seems that he was a member of a distinguished and influential noble family.So you can take it for granted that there was some formal education given.

As a young man Juan Ponce de Leon worked as a squire for Pedro Nunez de Guzman, who was Knight Commander of the Order of Calatrava. His years as an explorer were spent in the service of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain.

Juan Ponce de Leon first came to Florida in 1513. In 1521 de Leon later returned to perform a permanent settlement. The Native Americans didn't like that idea so they declared war. Juan Ponce de Leon was injured in the leg forcing him to retreat to the nearby island of Cuba where he died from his injury.

The Indian tribes of what Ponce De Leon would call Florida did not survive European contact. The upheaval was too great. At the time there were 6 main tribes now referred to as the Lost Tribes of Florida. The tribes were:

The Timucua (of Northern Florida including St. Augustine)

The Yamasee (a competing tribe in North Florida and Georgia)

The Mayiami (a tribe that lived around Lake Okachobee)

The Calusa (of Southwest Florida)

The Apalachee, (in the eastern Florida Panhandle) and the

somewhat unnamed tribe of "Mound Builders" in the western Panhandle that rapidly morphed into what would become the Muscogee tribe. The Muscogee were soon to be called the Creek(s) by the Europeans as their society progressed.

It is known with certainty the Ponce De Leon made contact with the Timucua and the Calusa. It is not known which of the other tribes, if any, Ponce De Leon may have encountered.

Ponce de Leon was influenced to explore by his cousin, Christopher Columbus. He was also motivated by the idea of fame and fortune which was the backbone of his explorations.

The only problems Juan Ponce de Leon faced were a hole in his ship and low on food.

He reached the Caribbean in November 1493. Historians are divided on what he did during the next several years, but it is possible that he returned to Spain at some point and made his way back to Hispaniola in 1502.
