Kentucky Derby

Thoroughbred horse racing is the sport that's practiced at the Kentucky Derby. The races have been held yearly, since the first one in 1875. The track is located in Louisville, Kentucky.

The short (and not sarcastic, either--is: all of them). Horse racing is comprised of many types and levels of races and the Commonwealth of Kentucky is host to all of them at its four racetracks: Churchill Downs (Louisville), Keeneland (Lexington), Turfway Park (Florence) and Ellis Park (Henderson).

The most famous of the races however are obviously the Kentucky Derby held on the First Sat. in May at Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Oaks, for 3 yr. old fillies held the Fri. before Derby day.

Other famous races held in KY include the Stephen Foster Handicap (Churchill), the Bluegrass Stakes (Keeneland) and the Lanes End (Turfway). And these are just a small sampling.

There are horse races held in Kentucky on roughly 300 out of 365 day per year!

After the death of Strike the Gold earlier this week, Sea Hero (1993) is now the oldest living Kentucky Derby winner.

Eddie Arcaro [February 19, 1916 - November 4, 1997] is considered the best rider to have ever played at the Kentucky Derby. Specifically, Arcaro is a five-time Kentucky Derby winner. He in fact is considered the greatest jockey in American horse racing history. That honor comes from the fact of his being one of only two jockeys to win the Derby five times. But he also is the only jockey to have won the U.S. Triple Crown twice: in 1941 on Whirlaway, and in 1948 on Citation.

At Churchill Downs the Kentucky Derby was and still is supposed to be held. The racetrack is located in Louisville, Kentucky. It's located on the former grounds of the Louisville Jockey Club. That was the historic, world-famous racetrack's original name. It wasn't until 1886 that the location started being called by its present name.

Two [2] minutes 2.66 seconds was the time that it took Mine That Bird [foaled May 10, 2006] to win the 2009 Kentucky Derby. The winning jockey was Calvin H. Borel [b. November 8, 1966]. He had been the winning jockey in the 2007 Derby. He became the winning jockey again in the 2010 Derby.

Issac Burns Murphy raced in the Kentucky Derby 11 times and won the event in 1884 on Buchanan, on Riley in 1890 and on Kingman in 1891. He had 1,412 starts with 628 wins which is a record that will last forever.

Yes, fillies have been among the Kentucky Derby's winners! Regret [1912 - April 11, 1934] was the first filly [female horse] to win the Kentucky Derby, in 1915, with a time of 2:05.40 minutes. Genuine Risk [February 15, 1977 - August 18, 2008] was the second filly to win the Derby, in 1980, with a time of 2:02.00 minutes. Winning Colors [February 14, 1985 - February 17, 2008] was the third and final filly to win the Derby, in 1988, with a time of 2:02.20 minutes.

Such severe fractures to the ankles of both forelegs that she had to be euthanized at the track was what happened to Eight Belles [February 23, 2005 - May 3, 2008] at the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby. The beautiful grey filly placed second after Big Brown [foaled April 10, 2005]. Immediately and tragically, she then collapsed.

Aptitude was the second place winner in the 2000 Kentucky Derby. He finished 1-1/2 lengths behind the winner, Fusaichi Pegasus. He finished 4 lengths ahead of third place winner Impeachment.

There are 175,000 people that attend the race and spend from 8 to 14 days packing the available rooms to capacity. Lodging as far away as Cleveland is effected with the need for an estimated 70,000 added rooms needed, demanded and sought after and all are priced at the top dollar. Over 5 million added meals will be prepared and served. No less then 7 million dollars worth of Mint Juleps will be sold. It has been made into a two week festival that honors 'The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports'. Louisville benefits. Kentucky benefits. It is an economic bonanza.

That the first winning jockey and the first winning trainer were African Americans is an interesting fact about black people and the Kentucky Derby. Oliver Lewis [1855? 1856?, Fayette County, Kentucky - 1924] was the winning jockey at the inaugural Kentucky Derby of May 17, 1875. The winning horse, Aristides, was trained by Ansel Williamson, a posthumous inductee into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1998.

A jockey uniform is the coloured silks worn by the jockey when riding in a horse race. The colours of the silks are chosen by the owner of the horse when he registers his ownership of the horse.

Sure they can! Just make sure that the kits are handed out prior to your Webelo II crossing over. You will not see a Paint horse in the Kentucky Derby. The Derby is for Thoroughbreds only. A Paint is a spotted horse with Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred bloodlines.

Angle Light was coupled as an entry with Secretariat in the 1973 Kentucky Derby.

He wore the number 1 saddlecloth but broke for the number 2 post position.

Secretariat wore the 1A saddlecloth and broke from the # 10 hole.

May; to be more specific, it is always the first Saturday in May. Say to anyone in horse racing circles, "The First Saturday in May" and they automatically know what you are referring to.

California Chrome won the Kentucky Derby in 2014.

It is preference of the trainer. D. Wayne Lukas is the trainer who kind of started the white bridle trend. Most of his former assistants such as Todd Pletcher and Steve Assmussen will use white bridles as well.
