When did jewelers start marking gold on jewelry?

I think it was in 1906 Gold and Silver began stamping, as required.

Later the law was amended to add Gold and Silver would now have to show its content, i.e.: 10kt, 14kt, 18kt, etc. or .925, .800, etc.

How do you use a 10x jewelers loupe with a customer?

You don't use a jewelers loupe with a customer. You use it with a gemstone. Closely inspecting your customer with a magnifying lens will very quickly result in an ex-customer... and perhaps an assault charge.

What was the duchess and the jeweler about?

This is a short story by Virginia Woolf about a wealthy jeweler in London, England who raised himself up from an impoverished youth yet struggles to achieve the satisfaction he thought wealth would bring.

Is marcasite jewelry old?

The simple answer is... it depends.

Marcasite jewellery was first produced by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, so there is some marcasite jewellery of genuine antiquity around. However as it is quite a delicate material, most surviving pieces will be in museums or universities by now.

More common is marcasite jewellery from the Victorian era (1800s) when it was also very popular. A lot of this can be recognised by the Art Deco styling and bird and animal motifs.

Finally modern marcasite jewellery often borrows from older, vintage styles and can look just as good. By its very nature even freshly produced marcasite has that vintage/antique "look". So most of what you will see for sale in the shops (or, for example on our website) is newly made marcasite, it just looks old.

How do you untie a very tight knot?

Depending on the thickness of the string or rope involved, using a pin, screwdriver, sharp scissors, or marlin spike is the way to go. Stick it under one strand and pry or pull it open. If you put the knot on a hard surface and hit it a few times with something heavy, this will open up some space to insert the tool.

What is jeweler's lens called?

I assume you mean the small magnifier worn on a band to hold it in front of one eye. It is called a loupe.

Do you need a license to sell an elixir?

What model drill is best for drilling into an ammonite fossil for jewelry making?

Normally with fossils, you would need thin, 2mm diamond drill head on a andheld base. (round works best, not the screw shaped). - i m just letting you know, i normally drill on rocks and semi precious stone, but i hve never tried drilling on ammonitr, its just what my friend does.

How do you become a gem cutter?

There are some courses available, but by and large teaching yourself is the way to go. There are many books and websites on the topic, and there are gem and mineral clubs around the world which may have members willing to help you get started. Cutting cabochons is very simple, requiring practice and patience. Faceting stones is a bigger investment in machinery, but anybody with decent hand-eye co-ordination and lots of patience can master it.

What does SU stamped on jewelry mean?

What is the dollar per weight for gold jewelry when selling?

Your question is a little confusing, but let me see if I can help. I'm sure what you're referring to is the scrap value and it is different depending on the gold's purity and what the gold market is for the day. Just like the stock market, gold value changes daily. Today gold is at $947/troy oz for pure gold. Lets say you have a 14k gold chain that is 25 grams. Well, consider there are are 31.1 grams in a troy oz and 14k gold is 58% of real gold and the rest is a mixture of other metals so it can retain its durability. Since your gold is 25 grams, you take the gold for the day, which is $947 and do as follows:

($947) X (.58) = $549 for a troy oz (31.1 grams) of 14k gold

Since you only have 25 grams, then . . .

Let $549/31.1= $17.60 per gram

Then

$17.60 X 25 grams = $441.30

Keep in mind that very few buyers will pay you actual cost. Your best bet is to find a metal refinery in your area to avoid the overwhelming scams sweeping the gold buyer market.

wheeeew . . . does that help?

How much gold jewelry does it take to make an ounce?

Depends upon the make and style of the jewelry. Thick, chunky, big stuff will add up a lot faster than tiny, delicate super-fine wire pieces.
