No, a leopard is smaller in size and weight than a lion (especially a full-grown male lion) and would avoid confrontation. This is one reason that a leopard will carry its prey high into the tree tops, so preventing lions and hyenas from robbing the leopard of its kill. A leopard is very skilled at climbing trees. In fact, a leopard is more likely to ambush prey by dropping down from tree branches, than stalking and chase its prey as does a pride of lions.
A female leopard is called a leopardess. However, as is the case of lions and tigers, more often than not, they are simply called leopards.

Has a black panther ever been spotted in Alabama?
yes it has but only once.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am from Mobile, Alabama and I have personally seen a black panther. The two other people in the car saw it also. Judging by the general size, shape, and very long tail I believe it was a black jaguar. While we were stopped at a traffic light it walked beside our car and then crossed the street in front of our car so we all got a very good look at it.
More recently my sister, her husband, and adult son, saw a black panther at the Grand Bay, AL I-10 rest stop during the daytime. They saw it walking along the back fence of the rest stop and then jump over the fence, stop and look at them, then walk across a road into the woods.
in my lifetime I have heard many eyewitness reports of black panther sitings in south Alabama around Mobile so I believe there is a breeding population in the area. My grandparents and great grandmother often spoke of seeing them so they have been in the area since at least the late 1800's.
I have never heard of a large spotted cat in the area, only the black variety. I would love to hear an explanation from an expert.
