What is the lifespan of domestic lizard?

Dear lizard-lover,

House lizards can last from a month to 10 years, depending on their living conditions. If you want your pet lizard to have a long life, you should follow some daily practices. First, your lizard should live in a large, but enclosed space brightly illuminated by lamplight 24/7. Second, they should be fed high-protein items like live crickets and ants (available for purchase at local pet stores) as oppose to lettuce and other veggies. Last essential lizard rule, is to mist your lizards once a day to keep their skin cool. Misters are also available at most pet stores. Hope this helped!

Do you hunt Komodo dragons?

They are a protected species. They are also dangerous. A bite or even a graze that draws blood will become infected and if not treated will result in death. If a komodo manages to bite the ankle of a large animal such as a deer, the dragon will wait several days for the poison from its saliva to finally cause the deer to die. Then, as if by magic, any komono in the area will appear to feast on the corpse. It is because they eat foul, fetish carrion, that their saliva is so potently germ-ridden.

Why do lizards have sticky pads on the underside of its 4 feet?

They do not - and not many lizards can climb smooth surfaces. The pads on the lizards that can climb glass are covered in millions of tiny hairs/bristles and the ends of these have a tiny spot of liquid - like an oil. The phenomenon that is used to enable them to climb smooth surfaces is surface tension. The reason for the ability to climb smooth surfaces is that they are then able to exploit more habitat - like large shiny leaves.

How does the porcupine protect himself?

A porcupine's entire body, with the exception of the belly and legs, is covered with sharp quills. The porcupine's quills, which are actually hardened, barbed hairs, are its primary source of protection. Porcupines cannot "throw" their quills as is popularly thought. They can, however, slap their quilled tail with lightning speed in the direction of an attacker. If a predator comes too close, it is likely to get a nose or mouth full of sharp quills that will work deeper and deeper into the flesh, causing a nasty infection and in extreme cases, possible death. A single porcupine may have upwards of 30,000 quills, more than 100 per square inch. Native Americans once used the quills as needles, and as ornaments on clothing. They were also used in the making of Native American warriors' breastplates. Porcupines are amazing climbers. They have been sighted over 60 feet up in the tops of trees, particularly cottonwoods, and these animals are extremely agile. Porcupines are herbivorous, feeding on bark and twigs, and prefer to eat softwoods, such as pine, elm and poplar. These rodents love salt and will seek it out. This craving leads them to eat such things as succulent plants, saddle leather, and the occasional shovel handle. In some areas, the porcupine's love for salt can get it into trouble. They will eat just about anything with a salty taste, including rose bushes, lily pads, garden produce and even car tires. Porcupines have been known to eat gardening equipment, wood siding on homes and yard furniture. Even when feeding only on trees, porcupines can cause problems. They can strip so much bark off the tree that it dies. There are some products that can discourage porcupines from literally eating you out of house and home. Most of these are liquid sprays that taste terrible to the porcupine. Another option for controlling problem porcupines is trapping and relocation. In northern climates, a natural predator of the porcupine, the fisher, is sometimes introduced into an area to control porcupine populations. Fishers are a type of weasel and are about the size of a large house cat. Other predators of the porcupine include the bobcat, and where found, the timber wolf, and wolverine. These animals are quick, and are able to flip the porcupine onto to its back in order to expose it's soft, unprotected belly. In Oklahoma, only the bobcat, and occasionally the coyote, are natural predators of the porcupine. Porcupines mate in the fall and give birth about 112 days later in the spring. They usually have only one offspring, called a porcupette, and twins are rare. The porcupine's quills are soft at birth and harden within their first hour of existence. They can eat solid food in about two weeks. Unlike their stoic parents, porcupettes are quite playful.

What do northern fence lizards eat?

Northern fence lizards eat a variety of small insects.

In captivity, 1/4 inch sized crickets are a good staple. These should be supplemented with a calcium powder containing vitamin D3, and once per week, a vitamin supplement.

Remember to research any reptile (or other) pet's needs carefully, and set up an enclosure with stable controlled heat at the correct temperatures, before you bring a reptile home. Captive care of reptiles is simple, but special equipment is required to enable them to survive.

Wild-caught animals should be left to experienced keepers who intend to breed them in order to bring in new blood to captive breeding programs. They can be difficult to establish, have internal parasites that require vet treatment, and are harder to tame.

How do garden lizards give birth?

Male and female reptiles do not have external genitalia to help owners determine the sex of a herp. Males and females do possess different reproductive organs, however. The male possesses two testicles, housed inside the body. The male also has a copulatory organ, either a single penis (turtles and tortoises, crocodilians) or a pair of hemipenes (lizards, snakes) that can often be seen as two bulges behind the cloaca at the base of the tail. The penis or hemipenis is not connected to the urinary tract, and is strictly an organ of reproduction. Lizards and snakes can be sexed by the use of a probe that is inserted into the cloaca, directed towards the tail, off of the midline. The probe will travel farther in the male than in the female.

How often should i feed my horned lizard?

Well, they may live for around about a week or so. But feeding them everyday will be great. They eat approximate 100 Harvester ants a day. But DO NOT FEED THEM SOMETHING TOO BIG!!! If they eat anything too large there digestive system can't take it, and they might die. Though, try to make sure there main food is Harvester ants. Or meal worms (they may not eat them) but maybe more for treats. Good Luck!!!
