Alternative Answer: It's actually pretty hard for even a novice to harm a lock when picking it "traditionally." The lock pieces are usually far stronger than the picks.
The chances of breaking a pick in a lock are actually higher than damaging the lock in any way, and most picks are steel so they're not exactly easy to break. You pretty much have to be trying and even then may not succeed.
The reality is that the damage done to locks from picking usually occurs over the course of repetitious picking, because the picks will slowly wear down the pins - but this isn't really any different than a key. If you insert a key into a lock 100,000 times the pins will wear down in exactly the same fashion, if not more. Since lock picks are inserted numerous times in the course of one opening of the lock, the wear is somewhat increased, but you'll still probably die before you ever wear down a lock this way.
You'll almost certainly get bored of any given lock long before you wear it down, and will have mastered that lock type literal decades before you wear out the pins.
By then you'll have moved on to something new and different to pick.
The most common form of wear for a lock - any lock, even one that isn't picked - is over-lubricating it. Spraying lubricants into the lock will make it slide easier in the short term, but the gunk builds up, does eventually dry out, and then creates friction which eventually wears down all the parts. Even then, a broken lock doesn't actually "break" very often - and when it does, it breaks into the open position.
It's not really very easy to break a lock at all. Even if you try you're going to be at it quite a while before you manage to break it.
