What happens to the volume of air in your lungs when you ascend to the surface of the ocean?

The air in your lungs expands in volume as you get closer to the surface of any water you swim in. This is because the air was compressed when deeper due to the pressure of the water around you. This is why when scuba divers always exhale while ascending to avoid rupturing their lungs as the air expands.

How are carbon dioxide and oxygen exchanged in the lungs?

Oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged in the lungs by different means. Carbon dioxide is dissolved in the blood stream as carbonic acid (CO2 + H2O --> H2CO3) and is important in maintaining our pH, or acid-base balance, at 7.4. Excess carbonic acid is turned back to carbon dioxide in the lungs due to diffussion and exhaled.

Oxygen is actively absorbed by the hemoglobin of the red blood cells, attaching to an iron ion at the heart of the hemoglobin protein. Oxygen does not significantly dissolve in the blood stream.

Where in the lungs does gaseous exchange take place?

alveoli is the site for gaseous exchange. They are the air filled sacs where carbon dioxide and oxygen is exchanged

What causes you to cough up black phlegm?

It could be due to some really serious diseases or disorders, so you should go to the doctor to find out what is causing yours. Old blood turns from red to black-looking, so if you have had a really bad infection like bronchitis, it could be that you have had some minor bleeding from the infection in your lungs or bronchitis. Blood from your nose and sinuses can also mix with your nasal mucus, run down the back of your throat with post nasal drip and look black when you cough it up. There are many much more serious problems that can cause it, so it should not be ignored as a warning sign, have the doctor examine you.

Black-looking phlegm you cough up can be residue from smoking that is stuck in your respiratory tract. It includes the tar from the burning process and can be caused by both marijuana and cigarettes. Smoking both is the ultimate bad choice. I've been coughing up black phlegm for about a month or two now and am quitting cigarettes and marijuana for good.

Face it, burning and inhaling smoke from anything can't be good for you, so get the will power to stop. The doctor can help you find help to stop. The longer you wait, the worse it will get. Waiting until later will cause you to become more addicted and have much more difficulty stopping.

Smoking isn't cool anymore...

It is either old blood, dead tissue, a substance from out of your body or a black mold infection.

Black mold infection is a dangerous disease that should be treated immediately.

If you want to inhale substances without getting tar and other filth in your lungs, use a vaporizer or e-sigarette instead.

Spelunkers lung, is a lung disease caused by cave exploration where bat excrement is present. The excrement may contain a fungus. This fungus' spores are inhaled into the lungs causeing inflammation. Also see: Acute Symptomatic Pulmonary Histoplasmosis.

It's associated more with caves in tropical / sub-tropical regions, and holding very large bat colonies.

I have never seen the name "spelunkers' lung" in any serious report - it's always called simply 'Histoplasmosis'. "Spelunker" is an old-fashioned term concocted by two American cavers in the 1930s(?), and after a decade or so of normal use, though only in the US, it became a term of derision among American cavers themselves, and is now rarely if ever used in caving literature.

Where are your lungs right or left side?
