The movie was released in l964, in some areas l965. I saw it at the state theatre in Jersey City as a first-run. It struck me there was something more than a little sacrilegious about some of the character"s actions.

They did like Mary Poppins very much. But they also knew she was rather strict and they knew not to cross her.

Between the lines- the class struggle between blue-collar workers and the management- bankers and Defence types- in one scene Admiral Boom detonates fireworks to dissuade the chimney sweeps- which seems to be in character. The internal twist almost smacks of Marxism. I thought there was something Red about Mary Poppins when I saw it as a kid, and also a little sacrilegious- in one scne they are outside a major, landmark church and it is raining. Mary"s Magic takes over rather than an instructive visit- if only to get out of the rain, to the cathedral. Mother and I saw this when I was a kid-and she thought that Mary would take the kids in the church- if only to get out of the rain- but not. start thinking. Disney was known to take swipes at religion, this is one of them- by the way the last movie he personally supervised as he died in l966.

She doesn"t have one in the story. Do not confuse with Witch-like character, again nameless who attempts to assault the Banks children when they are out on a hike at dusk, she lunges at the kids. ( ghost of Queen Victoria/) the old lady of threadneedle street - a slang term for the Bank of England- bear in mind the family name and occupation. The witch-lady really doesn"t belong in the picture and I often wonder why they inserted a negative female character- all other female characters are good, in the plot. maybe to show both sides. It is the only really frightening incident in the film, but does not escalate to actual violence. She makes animal-l;ike snarls at the kids- but does not actually harm them. still, child abuse in Disney Land, odd.

It was the first Disney film that mixed live action, stage magic ( trick photography with flight, levitation, etc, and Live actors and acting- and also background cartoons. it was probably the first Disney musical outside of all-cartoon romps which were of the musical type such as Cinderella. The film was also the last personally supervised by Disney, who died in l966. Oddly it was first made as a movie -and later as a play. There are a number of the usual Disneyfied cheap jabs at Religion. a large church is mere background.. not visited. The usual supernatural angles impede any spiritual values, as one might guess. oddly, a nonce verse in the song based on the nonce word of all time- has a line that seems to poke fun at the once-time Cardinal of Chicago, Mundelein. it goes rum did liddle liddle- Mundelein! By the way, the prelate"s name can be translated to mean- Small World. (Small World- more properly It's a Small World , was a theme song written by the Disney organization as a promotional stunt for Pepsi-Cola and Unicef and was not used in Poppins or any other Disney film- may have been used for background on Mickey Mouse Club, etc.

The only violence is a scene towards the end of the film, and arguably cut from some production versions- as it adds nothing to the plot- the kids are on the loose in the back streets of London and are briefly harrassed by an old woman near one of the Banks ( Queen Victoria"s Ghost or The Witch of Wall, or rather Threadneedle street) the introduction of this hostile female character- there is no witchraft in Poppins in the usual say(Oz) style, is very puzzling. there is a congested and chaotic scene and the kids are in effect rescued by Jack of All Trades Bert- by the way the Bert character did not figure in the original (not Disney adaptation) novels. a Banker be comes somewhat confused but does not die. there are no deaths or violence other than the (financial section witch) character who merely snarls at the kids and no reason is given for her hostility. it is a strange character- do not confuse with the Bird Woman who is feeding the birds, harmless lady.

More or less a seasoning or scenery character. by the way there was an Air Force officer (RAF) in Worl;d war II whose real name was General Trenchard, but was nicknamed by the media, such as the magazine, Aeroplane ( Boom!) no disrespect, but an odd nickname) Digger, would be more apt for Trenchard, right- see the sound of Trench, howevrer he was an airman not a Ground Trooper.
